La presente obra es un estudio de la sociedad rural de la España interior. Los protagonistas son labradores castellanos, personajes poco habituales en el análisis histórico, pero que en este caso, amparados en la Universidad de la Tierra de Soria, singular institución que posibilita las relaciones entre la ciudad y el campo, entre las elites urbanas y el mundo de los labradores, se convierten en personajes imprescindibles para poder reflejar ese “vivir campesino” que constituía la forma de vida del ochenta por ciento de los habitantes de la Castilla del siglo XVI. Se analizan aquí todos los aspectos de la vida de aquellos hombres, desde su organización institucional hasta las diversas formas de obtener los recursos en un medio físico hostil. Esta Castilla pobre, humilde, pero plena de vitalidad, es el contrapunto de la majestuosa España imperial, que, sin embargo, obtendrá de allí buena parte de los recursos humanos y materiales imprescindibles para poder seguir manteniendo su quijotesca aventura europea. No será casual sino causal el hecho de que la crisis finisecular, demográfica y económica de la Castilla rural del siglo XVI coincida con el reflujo de la potencialidad política de España en la Europa de principios del siglo XVII. Enrique Díez Sanz es doctor en Historia Moderna. Catedrático de Geografía e Historia en el Instituto de Bachillerato Camp clar y profesor de Història del Pensament Social en la Escola Universitaria de Treball Social de Tarragona.
