Il avoue n’y être pas toujours parvenu.Le sage de de l’Éthique « ne pense à rien moins qu’à la mort ». Le spinozisme ne peut donc se constituer qu’en excluant l’angoisse de notre disparition. On peut en conclure que l’idée de la mort est étrangère à la vérité. Si, au contraire, on tient cette idée pour constitutive de notre conscience, il faudra admettre que la raison ne peut suffire à expliquer l’homme. Sur ce point, on doit choisir.
