Iberian and Translation Studies: Literary Contact Zones offers fertile reflection on the dynamics of linguistic diversity and multifaceted literary translation flows taking place across the Iberian Peninsula. Drawing on cutting-edge theoretical perspectives and on a historically diverse body of case studies, the volume's sixteen chapters explore the key role of translation in shaping interliterary relations and cultural identities within Iberia. Mary Louise Pratt's contact zone metaphor is used as an overarching concept to approach Iberia as a translation(al) space where languages and cultural systems (Basque, Catalan, Galician, Portuguese, and Spanish) set up relationships either of conflict, coercion, and resistance or of collaboration, hospitality, and solidarity. In bringing together a variety of essays by multilingual scholars whose conceptual and empirical research places itself at the intersection of translation and literary Iberian studies, the book opens up a new interdisciplinary field of enquiry: Iberian translation studies. This allows for a renewed study of canonical authors such as Joan Maragall, Fernando Pessoa, Camilo José Cela, and Bernardo Atxaga, and calls attention to emerging bilingual contemporary voices. In addition to addressing understudied genres (the entremez and the picaresque novel) and the phenomena of self-translation, indirect translation, and collaborative translation, the book provides fresh insights into Iberian cultural agents, mediators, and institutions.

En 1951 la legendaria Nancy Cunard (Leicestershire, Reino Unido, 1896-París, 1965) realiza una traducción al inglés de la obra de don Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Ligazón, para ser montada en el Watergate Theatre de Londres. A pesar de que la lucha por verla escenificada y el intento de difusión por otros medios fracasan en última instancia, la documentación inédita acerca de este desconocido proyecto se ha conservado en los archivos que el Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center de la University of Texas at Austin mantiene de la escritora, editora y traductora británica. Gracias a la correspondencia, diarios, notas y manuscritos de los involucrados es posible reconstruir el encadenamiento de imprevisibles y desafortunadas situaciones que frustran los planes de representación y publicación. A través de este material se pueden recuperar ciertos rasgos tanto de la peculiar e idiosincrática cultura que rodea al teatro independiente en el Londres de los años cuarenta y cincuenta, como del ambiente social, político y artístico en el que la obra de don Ramón es reconocida dentro y fuera de España durante estas décadas. En estas páginas se reconstruyen las circunstancias de este acontecimiento y en varios apéndices documentales se aporta la reproducción de los textos más significativos que permiten recobrar y valorar un proyecto seminal olvidado hasta la fecha. José Manuel Pereiro Otero (Santiago de Compostela, 1970) es licenciado por la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela y doctorado por la University of Colorado at Boulder. Tras haber ejercido como profesor de lengua y literatura españolas en la University of Texas at Austin, se ha incorporado recientemente al Department of Spanish and Portuguese de Temple University (Filadelfia, EE.UU.). Sus intereses académicos giran alrededor de la literatura moderna de los siglos XVIII, XIX y XX. Además de pertenecer al comité editorial del Anuario Valle-Inclán, ha escrito y publicado trabajos acerca de escritores españoles y latinoamericanos como Vicente García de la Huerta, Manuel José Quintana, Andrés Bello, José Zorrilla, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, Rubén Darío, Ramón María del Valle-Inclán, Jacinto Benavente, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez y Gonzalo Torrente Ballester.
