La trahison est une préoccupation constante de la société médiévale, difficile à appréhender à des siècles de distance car ses acceptions sont fluctuantes et ses visages multiples. Réunis en congrès à Lyon au mois de juin 2008, plusieurs chercheurs - historiens des textes et des images, littéraires, juristes, épigraphistes - travaillant sur l'ensemble des Ve-XVe siècles, ont croisé leurs approches pour parvenir à cerner ce que les hommes du Moyen Âge considéraient comme trahison et quel était le contenu de leur discours sur le sujet. La présente synthèse regroupe leurs contributions et fait état de leurs réflexions et de leurs conclusions. Dans une société très normalisée comme l'est la société médiévale, la trahison apparaît toujours sous les traits de la monstruosité. Furtive, elle s'ourdit à l'abri des regards, brouille les repères, subvertit l'ordre social. Elle transgresse les liens familiaux, amicaux, sociaux ou politique sur lesquels repose l'équilibre du monde et met clairement en péril le salut de l'humanité. Elle hante les relations entre les hommes en tant que réalité objective ou fantasme. Les réactions qu'elle suscite sont multiples : répulsion, haine, peur, désir de vengeance... Il faut punir le traître afin de purifier la société de la souillure, donner un caractère exemplaire à son châtiment afin de dissuader mais peut-être aussi envisager sa réhabilitation et son pardon. La trahison approchée dans sa diversité et sa multiplicité apporte, ici, un éclairage singulier sur les relations sociales au sein de la société médiévale.

Julien Benda's classic study of 1920s Europe resonates today. The "treason of the intellectuals" is a phrase that evokes much but is inherently ambiguous. The book bearing this title is well known but little understood. This edition is introduced by Roger Kimball. From the time of the pre-Socratics, intellectuals were a breed apart. They were non-materialistic knowledge-seekers who believed in a universal humanism and represented a cornerstone of civilized society. According to Benda, this all began to change in the early twentieth century. In Europe in the 1920s, intellectuals began abandoning their attachment to traditional philosophical and scholarly ideals, and instead glorified particularisms and moral relativism. The "treason" of which Benda writes is the betrayal by the intellectuals of their unique vocation. MAURICE KEEN Orders of lay knights - the most famous of which are those of the Garter and the Golden Fleece - were founded at some time between 1325 and 1470 in almost every kingdom of Western Christendom, and played an important part in the life of the court. Jonathan Boulton defines the "monarchical" orders as those with corporate statutes which attached the presidential office to the crown of the princely founder, or made it hereditary in his house. Modelled eitherdirectly or indirectly on the fictional society of the Round Table, they incorporated varying numbers of elements borrowed from the older religious orders of knighthood and from contemporary institutions. This study explores the nature and history of thirteen orders, and reveals them as not only an ingenious supplement to (or replacement for) the feudo-vassalic ties that still bound the leading members of the nobility to their sovereign, but also as the most important institutional embodiments of the secular ideals of chivalry that were at the heart of the international court culture of the age.
