A new account of the Mediterranean economy in the 10th to 12th centuries, forcing readers to entirely rethink the underlying logic to medieval economic systems. Chris Wickham re-examines documentary and archaeological sources to give a detailed account of both individual economies, and their relationships with each other. Chris Wickham offers a new account of the Mediterranean economy in the tenth to twelfth centuries, based on a completely new look at the sources, documentary and archaeological. Our knowledge of the Mediterranean economy is based on syntheses which are between 50 and 150 years old; they are based on outdated assumptions and restricted data sets, and were written before there was any usable archaeology; and Wickham contends that they have to be properly rethought. This is the first book ever to give a fully detailed comparative account of the regions of the Mediterranean in this period, in their internal economies and in their relationships with each other. It focusses on Egypt, Tunisia, Sicily, the Byzantine empire, Islamic Spain and Portugal, and north-central Italy, and gives the first comprehensive account of the changing economies of each; only Byzantium has a good prior synthesis. It aims to force our rethinking of how economies worked in the medieval Mediterranean. It also offers a rethinking of how we should understand the underlying logic of the medieval economy in general.

The nEU-Med project is part of the Horizon 2020 programme, in the ERC Advanced project category. It began in October 2015 and will be concluded in October 2020. The University of Siena is the host institution of the project. The project is focussed upon two Tuscan riverine corridors leading from the Gulf of Follonica in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Colline Metallifere. It aims to document and analyze the form and timeframe of economic growth in this part of the Mediterranean, which took place between the 7th and the 12thc. Central to this is an understanding of the processes of change in human settlements, in the natural and farming landscapes in relation to the exploitation of resources, and in the implementation of differing political strategies. This volume brings together the research presented at the first nEUMed workshop, held in Siena on 11-12 April, 2017. The aim of the workshop was to draw up an initial survey of research and related work on the project, one and a half years after its inception. The project is composed of several research units. Each unit covers an aspect of the interdisciplinary research underpinning the nEU-Med project, each with their own methodology. For this first volume of results, it was decided not to give an account of all the work carried out within all the units, but to select those lines of investigation which, at the end of the first year and a half, have made it possible to articulate and develop an interdisciplinary research strategy.

Fra il 2017 ed il 2018 la bassa Val di Cornia è stata interessata da indagini sistematiche multidisciplinari (archeologiche, topografiche e geochimiche), tese alla ricostruzione del paesaggio storico. Esse si inquadrano all’interno del progetto Erc-Advanced: Origins of a new economic union (7th-12th centuries): resources, landscapes and political strategies in a Mediterranean region (nEU-Med), coordinato dall’Università di Siena (p.i. prof. Richard Hodges, prof.ssa Giovanna Bianchi). L’area di studio del progetto include il primo entroterra piombinese e scarlinese, attualmente due pianure intensamente coltivate, e si estende fino alle alture delle Colline Metallifere. Le numerose indicazioni archeologiche pregresse hanno consentito una selezione mirata di aree da sottoporre a nuove indagini di superficie. L’utilizzo combinato di più tecniche (in particolare survey archeologico e analisi geochimiche realizzate con l’uso di tecnologia XRF portatile) ha prodotto una mappatura multidisciplinare del territorio di grande impatto (ad oggi sono state acquisite oltre 8300 misure). Dalla sovrapposizione di dati geochimici, geoarcheologici ed archeologici sono emersi elementi significativi a supporto della caratterizzazione geomorfologica, ambientale ed antropica di questa porzione di territorio e si sono definiti nuovi protocolli operativi per testare l’affidabilità delle tecniche diagnostiche XRF in archeologia, con particolare riferimento alla ricostruzione del paesaggio storico.

Oltre quaranta anni di ricerche nella Maremma toscana, uno dei territori meglio indagati archeologicamente a livello europeo; un progetto ERC-Advanced, nEU-Med, che ha consentito di rileggere vecchi dati e produrne di nuovi grazie ad un’intensa ricerca multidisciplinare; un tema, i beni pubblici, in questi anni al centro dell’interesse degli storici delle fonti documentarie, qui declinato attraverso il dato materiale. Sono queste le basi di partenza del volume, nel quale i risultati acquisiti dalla ricerca degli ultimi anni all’interno di un’area eletta a caso studio, sono stati innestati su quelli elaborati nei decenni precedenti, con l’obiettivo di individuare i markers materiali dei beni regi e capirne la loro formazione e gestione tra IX ed XI secolo. I risultati della ricerca interpretati in una nuova prospettiva concorrono ad individuare una possibile chiave di lettura delle realtà storiche di questa area toscana, capace di generare risposte agganciate a più ampie tematiche: il ruolo del publicum in rapporto alle aristocrazie e alle comunità locali; le trasformazioni dei paesaggi antropici e naturali; la peculiarità di produzioni e scambi; i tempi e i modi dell’incastellamento; la crescita economica delle campagne prima del grande balzo in avanti del XII secolo.
