Chronicling sixteenth-century Spain to the present day, Beyond Human aims to decentre the human and acknowledge the material historicity of more-than-human nature. The book explores key questions relating to ecological equity, justice, and responsibility within and beyond Spain in the Anthropocene. Examining relations between Iberian cultural practices, historical developments, and ecological processes, Maryanne L. Leone, Shanna Lino, and the contributors to this volume reveal the structures that uphold and dismantle the non-human–human dichotomy and nature-culture divide. The book critiques works from the Golden Age to the twenty-first century in a wide range of genres, including comedia, royal treatises, agricultural reports, paintings, satirical essays, horror fiction and film, young adult and speculative literature, poetry, graphic novels, and television series. The authors contend that Spanish cultural studies must expose the material historicity that entangles today’s ecological crises and ecosocial injustices with previous, future, and contemporary entities. The book argues that this will require the simultaneous decentring of the human and of the Anthropocene as an ecocritical framework. Las localidades del suroeste de la provincia salmantina fueron especialmente castigadas por la Guerra de la Independencia española, debido a que por esa zona fronteriza entraban y salían de Portugal muchos de los ejércitos intervinientes en la Guerra Peninsular. Este libro describe de forma muy detallada, la mayoría de los acontecimientos históricos acaecidos en una de esas localidades, la villa de Fuenteguinaldo, pero también en tantos otros pueblos de la Comarca mirobrigense y vecinos de Portugal y Extremadura. Recoge el trabajo de más de cinco años de investigaciones realizadas en multitud de fuentes de diversa índole, procedentes en su mayoría de España, Portugal y Reino Unido, y en menor medida de Francia. Desde noviembre de 1807 y hasta mayo de 1813, Fuenteguinaldo fue un continuo trasiego de tropas francesas, españolas, portuguesas y británicas, que llevaron a la Villa: hambre, saqueos, enfermedades y muerte; sin embargo, también hubo momentos de sosiego en los que los soldados participaron de las costumbres guinaldesas. Durante los seis años que permaneció la guerra en esas tierras, los guinaldeses de entonces fueron de los primeros europeos en ver derrotadas a las águilas imperiales francesas; así como también fueron de los primeros en ver victorioso al general Wellington, el cual pocos años después enterraría definitivamente el imperio napoleónico. Pero de todos los hechos acaecidos en esos seis años, destacan los tres periodos en que se situó en la Villa el Cuartel General de Wellington y las 36 horas críticas vividas por el Lord después del Combate de El Bodón, que a punto estuvieron de cambiar la historia de España, de Portugal y de Europa, pero en las que al final la estrella de Wellington brilló tanto como la de Napoleón. En ningún otro momento histórico, Fuenteguinaldo y sus alrededores fueron tan observados como durante la Guerra de la Independencia y los libros de memorias, cartas y diarios de soldados, principalmente británicos, han permitido conocer con gran detalle cómo era la vida en la zona a comienzos del siglo XIX. Además se incorporan reproducciones de valiosos grabados y mapas de la época, así como facsímiles de documentos, lo que le confiere a esta publicación características de libro-catálogo.
