This book provides a set of testimonies that bring into focus the children and adolescents who have been driven from their lands as subjects with rights who have different ways of envisioning the world. For that reason, this book may be of interest to those experiencing childhood or adolescence in this way; similarly, it may offer insight for those who—for professional or family reasons—are in touch with these young people, including teachers, psychologists, parents, classmates and teens, counselors, social workers and others. Yet within these pages, the landscapes we sketch are also, in some sense, reflections of past atmospheres. And for this reason, historians, sociologists, anthropologists, and other scholars will also find material for academic investigation herein. As values and beliefs come into play in this book, it can inform perspectives on ethics or political philosophy as well. The relationship with others, the behaviors unique to children and adolescents—and the corresponding social sanctions of these behaviors—and the relationship between public and private during this period of life could be other areas to explore. Like the indecipherable Swiss army knife, the genre of this book is difficult to pinpoint. It is an essay but also a piece of literature and the discerning reader will also find historiographical, philosophical, and political reflections in these pages. One more book. Another book. Books are almost always an adventure and what is written therein is, like a map, only part of the journey. An important part, no doubt, but still merely a part. Experience—the true challenge—is up to the reader.

The Polyphonic Machine written by Niall H.D. Geraghty and has been published by University of Pittsburgh Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-29 with Literary Criticism categories.

Focusing on the work of the Argentine authors César Aira, Marcelo Cohen, and Ricardo Piglia, The Polyphonic Machine conducts a close analysis of the interrelations between capitalism and political violence in late twentieth-century Argentina. Taking a long historical view, the book considers the most recent Argentine dictatorship of 1976–1983 together with its antecedents and its after-effects, exploring the transformations in power relations and conceptions of resistance which accompanied the political developments experienced throughout this period. By tracing allusive fragments of Argentine political history and drawing on a range of literary and theoretical sources Geraghty proposes that Aira, Cohen and Piglia propound a common analysis of Argentine politics during the twentieth century and construct a synergetic philosophical critique of capitalism and political violence. The book thus constitutes a radical reappraisal of three of the most important authors in contemporary Argentine literature and contributes to the philosophical and historical understanding of the most recent Argentine military government and their systematic plan of state terrorism.

This book is the first to focus specifically on the exile-poetry link in the case of Argentina since the 1950s. Throughout Argentina's history, authors and important political figures have lived and written in exile. Thus exile is both a vital theme and a practical condition for Argentine letters, yet conversely, contemporary Argentina is a nation of immigrants from Europe and the rest of Latin America. Poetry is often perceived as the least directly political of genres, yet political and other forms of exile have impinged equally on the lives of poets as on any group. This study concentrates on writers who both regarded themselves as in some way exiled and who wrote about exile. This selection includes poets who are influential and recognised, but in general have not enjoyed the detailed study that they deserve: Alejandra Pizarnik, Juan Gelman, Osvaldo Lamborghini, Nestor Perlongher, Sergio Raimondi, Cristian Aliaga, and Washington Cucurto.

First published in Latin in 1516, Thomas More's Utopia is one of the most influential books in the Western philosophical and literary tradition and one of the supreme achievements of Renaissance humanism. This is the first edition of Utopia since 1965 (the Yale edition) to combine More's Latin text with an English translation, and also the first edition to provide a Latin text that is both accurate and readable. The text is based on the early editions (with the Froben edition of March 1518 as copy-text), but spelling and punctuation have been regularized in accordance with modern practices. The translation is a revised version of the acclaimed lively and readable Adams translation, which also appears in Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought. This edition, which incorporates the results of recent Utopian scholarship, also includes an introduction, textual apparatus, a full commentary and a guide to the voluminous scholarly and critical literature on Utopia.

'It was not the Baby Boomers who ushered in the first era of widespread drug experimentation. It was their parents.' The generation that survived the second World War emerged with a profoundly ambitious sense of social experimentation. In the '40s and '50s, transformative drugs rapidly entered mainstream culture, where they were not only legal, but openly celebrated. American physician John C. Lilly infamously dosed dolphins (and himself) with LSD in a NASA-funded effort to teach dolphins to talk. A tripping Cary Grant mumbled into a Dictaphone about Hegel as astronaut John Glenn returned to Earth. At the centre of this revolution were the pioneering anthropologists - and star-crossed lovers - Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson. Convinced the world was headed toward certain disaster, Mead and Bateson made it their life's mission to reshape humanity through a new science of consciousness expansion, but soon found themselves at odds with the government bodies who funded their work, whose intentions were less than pure. Mead and Bateson's partnership unlocks an untold chapter in the history of the twentieth century, linking drug researchers with CIA agents, outsider sexologists and the founders of the Information Age.

The topic of the crisis and recovery of utopia, at both a global and regional level, stands out in these melancholic times in which the capitalist era can no longer legitimize itself as an irreplaceable form of social existence. This book reflects upon the place of utopia, moving from classic Greece to the neoliberal era, specifically as manifested in Latin America. It studies utopia as a political and literary device for paradigmatic changes. As such, it links with the literary mode of the travelogue and its supporting role in the consolidation and perpetuation of the modern/colonial discourse. The book reviews critical approaches to modernity and postmodernity as a philosophical enquiry on the role of symbolic languages, particularly the one played by the image and the theories of representation and performance. With that, and by using decolonialist theory to inform an audio-visual text analysis, it contributes to film philosophy with a model of analysis for Latin American cinema: namely, “the allegory of the motionless traveler”. This model states that Latin America millennial cinema possesses a significant aesthetic-political power achieved by enacting a process of utopic re-narration. This book will appeal to students and academics in the humanities and social sciences and readers interested in film culture, as well as those searching specifically for new perspectives on socio-symbolic decolonialist dynamics operating at the crossroads of cultural politics and political culture in Latin America.
