Franco, que convirtió su dictadura en una forma de exterminio de sus enemigos, hizo del Valle de los Caídos su obsesión, lo visitó como si fueran las obras de su casa y lo convirtió en el símbolo ganador de la alianza propagandística entre su régimen y la Iglesia católica. Miles de republicanos yacen junto con quien los mandó matar, cientos de presos antifascistas fueron condenados a trabajos forzosos en el Valle de los Caídos. Más de cuarenta años después de recuperadas las libertades en España, la democracia no ha llegado aún a este monumento franquista, gigantesco, triste y amenazante.
