In questo volume si presentano quattro saggi assai diversi tra loro, ma collegati tenacemente da un elemento portante costituito dalla fonte scritta medievale intorno all’importanza della via francigena per la totalità della viabilità dell’epoca. Il saggio su La via Francigena in Toscana costituisce il completamento di quelli già apparsi negli Atti citati e relativi l’uno al passaggio della Francigena attraverso l’Appennino Tosco-emiliano e l’altro al suo percorso nell’alto Lazio. Si ribadisce come la via Francigena rappresenti sì un’innovazione, ma formatasi attraverso il raccordo di diversi spezzoni di strade romane, riusate in una mutata gerarchia e in un contesto storico diverso, che nel suo evolversi implicherà ulteriori varianti nel corso dei secoli, soprattutto nel basso medioevo. Il saggio di Riccardo Chellini affronta i problemi della viabilità a sud-est di Firenze, sottolineando in particolare il rapporto di continuità del percorso medievale con la via Cassia di epoca romana imperiale, anche se con un progressivo declassamento, che la riduce ad un collegamento locale con Arezzo, mentre ne viene abbandonato il proseguimento in direzione di Chiusi per l’impaludarsi della Val di Chiana (almeno agli inizi del XIV secolo), il che porta a privilegiare un andamento pedemontano di tradizione etrusca. Il saggio di Luigi Conti fornisce una preziosa raccolta di inediti e rari documenti d’archivio, che costituiranno una fonte essenziale per una ricostruzione capillare del sistema viario irradiante da Firenze, impiantato e mantenuto tra XIII e XIV secolo dalla Repubblica Fiorentina, anche mediante una dispendiosa operazione di costruzione di ponti.

In the Middle Ages, relic cults provoked rich expressions of devotion not only in hagiographic literature and visual art but also in liturgical music and ritual. Despite the long-recognized inter-play between these diverse media, historians of the period rarely integrate analysis of sacred music into their research on other modes of worship espoused by relic cults. Holy Treasure and Sacred Song situates this oft-neglected yet critical domain of religious life at the center of an examination of relic cults in medieval Tuscany. Long recognized as a center of artistic innovation during the Renaissance, this region also boasted the rich and well documented veneration of holy bishops and martyrs buried in the cathedrals and suburban shrines of its principal cities. Author Benjamin Brand reveals that the music composed to honor these local saints - no fewer than ninety chants for the Mass and Divine Office - were essential components of larger devotional campaigns that included the recording of their life stories and the building and decoration of their shrines. Furthermore, the local Tuscan clerics who assumed control of these campaigns with the intent of gaining both temporal and spiritual power drew on influential global models - literary, architectural, musical, and ritual - from preeminent European powers, Rome and the Carolingian Empire. By integrating detailed analyses of plainsong and sacred ritual into this rich panorama, Brand traces the dialectic between local, regional, and pan-European trends, revealing the centrality of the liturgy in the development of medieval relic cults and, in a broader sense, medieval European culture and politics. Destruction remains a relatively unexplored and badly understood topic in archaeology and history. The term itself refers to some form and measurable degree of damage inflicted to an object, a system or a being, usually exceeding the stage during which repair is still possible but most often it is examined for its impact with destructive events interpreted in terms of a punctuated equilibrium, extraordinary features that represent the end of an archaeological culture or historical phase and the beginning of a new one. The three-day international workshop of which this volume presents the proceedings took place at Louvain-la-Neuve in Belgium, from November 24 to 26, 2011 and was organized by CEMA – Centre d'Étude des Mondes Antiques – one of the research centres within INCAL – Institut de Civilisations, Arts et Lettres. Our aim with organising this gathering was to seriously engage with destruction as a phenomenon and how it is perceived by archaeologists, historians and philologists of the ancient world. The volume is similarly structured to the workshop which it reflects, with first a series of more theoretical papers and then following a chronological and geographical order.

Gli Atti che qui si presentano raccolgono relazioni svolte in due congressi, e precisamente la III Conferenza Italiana di Archeologia Medievale, svoltasi nell’Università di Cassino dal 17 al 19 dicembre 2003 sul tema ‘L’archeologia medievale in Italia nell’ultimo trentennio: un bilancio’, e il VI Congresso di Archeologia Medievale, svoltosi a Roma nella sede del CNR il 31 maggio e il I giugno 2006 sul tema ‘Archeologia Medievale nell’Italia centro-meridionale: insediamenti e territorio’. La maggior parte dei contributi si rivolge all’archeologia del paesaggio medievale nell’Italia centrale e meridionale, comprese le due isole maggiori. Vi si trovano messi a confronto i risultati delle più recenti ricerche topografiche sia ad ampio raggio che su singole realtà territoriali, offrendo così sia bilanci regionali (Abruzzo, Molise, Sicilia), che analisi su aree circoscritte, che tuttavia prospettano problematiche importanti, perché immettono nella discussione dati inediti derivanti da ricerche ancora in corso. I principali settori d’indagine che si riflettono in questi Atti sono l’archeologia urbana (presente con saggi su Benevento, L’Aquila e Siponto), l’incastellamento (si va dal Lazio al Molise, dalla Sardegna alla Sicilia), l’insediamento monastico (in Toscana e nel Lazio), la viabilità e la carta archeologica. Alcuni saggi affrontano i problemi di continuità e di innovazione della rete viaria tra tarda antichità e medioevo dalla Toscana al Molise e alla Sicilia; in particolare un corposo saggio si riferisce alla viabilità medievale del contado fiorentino e alle sue infrastrutture.
