Puebla fue una de las ciudades novohispanas en las que se fundaron mayor n mero de conventos de mujeres. Entre 1568 y 1748 se erigieron once monasterios de clausura que se integraron de manera particularmente importante en el mundo urbano y dieron cierta originalidad a un complejo entramado social: sus iglesias y edificaciones contribuyeron al ordenamiento simb lico del espacio urbano, su ubicaci n dio cohesi n al asentamiento espa ol a trav s de los ejes de distribuci n del agua, de la poblaci n de sus inmediaciones y de la econom a local y regional, de la cual participaron activamente. Los monasterios femeninos se convirtieron en n cleos en los que se reprodujeron y difundieron h bitos y comportamientos europeos que se fusionaban y adaptaban con costumbres familiares y sociales locales y que, si bien fueron considerados como expresi n de civilidad, estuvieron sujetos a cambios y readecuaciones no siempre tolerantes por parte de la Iglesia postridentina.

"It was mid-December 1610 in Mexico City. The Church was in its preparatory season of Advent, leading up to the celebration of Christ's birth at Christmas. The nuns of the Encarnacion convent had just celebrated the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, on 8 December. But now, in this time usually filled with joy, some of the nuns were nervous. Their choirbooks were missing. Without them, the nuns would not be able to celebrate the anniversary of Christ's birth adequately. A musician priest of the metropolitan cathedral, located just three blocks from the convent, had caused the nuns' alarm: Antonio Rodríguez Mata (d. 1643) had all five of the missing books. He had borrowed them from Sister Flor de Santa Clara, the convent "vicaria de coro" (choir vicar) but had failed to return them despite the convent's repeated requests. The diocesan vicar general and the attorney general were summoned. The nuns of the Encarnación demanded that Mata be imprisoned if he failed to return the books immediately following the denunciation. The threat of jail time was serious, but so too was the alleged offense: Mata was impeding the nuns from performing their liturgical music for Christmas"--

Catholicism underwent momentous change as it transitioned to the modern era and the relatively new colonial environments of North America and the Caribbean. Critical to this evolution was the role of women in religion. John J. Clune Jr. examines the impact of the eighteenth-century European Enlightenment on the lives of nuns in colonial Cuba and New Orleans, both crucial centers of Catholicism where women had significant influence. Only recently have scholars begun to give attention to the importance of female religious life in the Spanish Empire. Clune illustrates the changing attitudes toward convents in the eighteenth century by contrasting the Clares, Dominicans, and Carmelites of Havana with the Ursulines of New Orleans (and later of Cuba). Built upon research in the archives of Spain, Cuba, Louisiana, and Texas, Clune acknowledges the importance of female religious life in the Spanish Empire and demonstrates that the decline in prestige of female religious orders in Latin America began not with Vatican II in the mid-twentieth century but with enlightened reform during the reigns of Spanish kings Charles III and Charles IV.
