Con motivo del Jubileo conmemorativo del nacimiento de santo Domingo de Guzmán, en el año 2021, el Ayuntamiento de Villaescusa de Haro (Cuenca) acertó en su intención de organizar unas jornadas, para reivindicar su pasado en relación con la Orden de Predicadores, y de paso, promover las investigaciones y actuaciones que en materia de conservación del patrimonio, se han venido realizando en distintos lugares de la provincia de Cuenca, donde los dominicos arraigaron sus monasterios para doctrina de la fe cristiana.

The Dominicans in the Americas and the Philippines (c. 1500–c. 1820) is part of a renewal of interest in the global history of the Dominican Order. Many of the essays were carefully selected among some of the papers presented at the III International Conference on the History of the Order of Preachers in the Americas, a gathering that stands in continuity with the conferences of Mexico (2013) and Bogotá (2016). This book, the contributors of which are active researchers specializing in the history of the Order of Preachers in Latin America, is organized in four parts: Women and the Order of Preachers; “Benditos Bienes”: Libraries and Material Patrimony; Missions, Devotional, and Daily Life; and The Order of Preachers and Their Writings. This book presents the first study of music in convent life in a single Hispanic city, Barcelona, during the early modern era. Exploring how convents were involved in the musical networks operating in sixteenth-century Barcelona, it challenges the invisibility of women in music history and reveals the intrinsic role played by nuns and lay women in the city’s urban musical culture. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, this innovative study offers a cross-disciplinary approach that not only reveals details of the rich musical life in Barcelona’s nunneries, but shows how they took part in wider national and transnational networks of musical distribution, including religious, commercial, and social dimensions of music. The connections of Barcelona convents to networks for the dissemination of music in and outside the city provide a rich example of the close relationship between musical networks, urban society, and popular culture. Addressing how music was understood as a marker of identity, prestige, and social status and, above all, as a conduit between earth and heaven, this book provides new insights into how women shaped musical traditions in the urban context. Era un Convento-Universidad que estaba en manos de la Orden de Predicadores, y en el que se enseñaba exclusivamente Filosofía y Teología. El apéndice documental incluye los Estatutos del Colegio de San Matías y San Jaime, los Estatutos de la Universidad, así como la relación de los graduados que se ha conservado para los períodos 1600-1623 y 1659-1717. Entre ellos, se encuentran numerosos clérigos regulares y seculares de Valencia, Cataluña, Aragón y Mallorca.

En el proceso de renovación temática y metodológica experimentado por la historia, los estudios sobre las mujeres han cobrado especial protagonismo, destacando entre ellos las investigaciones sobre el mundo religioso, tanto que, en algunos casos, el pasado de las monjas –sobre todo en el tiempo barroco, de la Contrarreforma, en el que abundó aquella forma de vida– es conocido casi mejor que el de los frailes. No ocurre lo mismo, sin embargo, con las dominicas, fundamentalmente en los territorios de la antigua Provincia de Aragón, y de manera especial en Valencia. Su memoria escrita quedó desperdigada a causa de los desastres bélicos y las convulsiones políticas contemporáneas, que condenaron al olvido a los grandes cenobios monjiles aquí establecidos por la Orden de Predicadores. El presente libro se ocupa de una de tales fundaciones, que, bajo la advocación de “Corpus Christi”, levantaría en Carcaixent con el mediar de la decimoséptima centuria sor Inés del Espíritu Santo, en el siglo Sisternes de Oblites, la dominica valenciana más ilustre de todos los tiempos.
