En una de las catedrales del norte de Europa un exquisito grupo en altorrelieve representa la vida de oración. Está dispuesto en tres paneles. El primero de ellos nos recuerda el precepto apostólico: "Orad sin cesar". Vemos la fachada de un amplio templo que se abre a la plaza del mercado. La gran plaza está sembrada de multitudes de hombres ávidos, que gesticulan, negocian, todos evidentemente con la intención de obtener ganancias. Pero Uno, que lleva una corona de espinas y está vestido con una prenda tejida sin costuras desde arriba, se mueve silenciosamente a través de la clamorosa multitud y somete al santo temor al corazón más codicioso. El segundo panel muestra el recinto del templo y sirve para ilustrar el culto común de la Iglesia. Los ministros vestidos de blanco se apresuran aquí y allá. Llevan aceite para la lámpara, agua para el lavatorio y sangre del altar; con intención pura, con los ojos vueltos hacia la gloria invisible, cumplen los deberes de su sagrada vocación. El tercer panel nos introduce en el santuario interior. Un adorador solitario ha entrado dentro del velo, y callado y humilde en la presencia de Dios, se inclina ante la resplandeciente Shekinah. Esto representa la vida oculta de oración de la que habló el Maestro en las conocidas palabras: "Pero tú, cuando ores, entra en tu cámara interior y, cerrada la puerta, ora a tu Padre que está en secreto, y tu Padre, que ve en secreto, te recompensará" (Mateo 6:6, R.V.). Nuestro Señor da por sentado que su pueblo orará. Y, de hecho, en la Escritura generalmente la obligación externa de la oración está implícita más que afirmada. Movidos por un instinto divinamente implantado, nuestra naturaleza clama por Dios, por el Dios vivo. Y por más que este instinto sea aplastado por el pecado, se despierta con fuerza en la conciencia de la redención. Teólogos de todas las escuelas, y cristianos de todo tipo, coinciden en reconocer este principio de la vida nueva. Crisóstomo ha dicho: "El hombre justo no deja de orar hasta que deja de serlo"; y Agustín: "El que ama poco, ora poco, y el que ama mucho, ora mucho"; y Richard Hooker: "La oración es lo primero con lo que comienza una vida justa, y lo último con lo que termina"; " y Pre la Combe, "Quien tiene un corazón puro nunca dejará de orar, y quien sea constante en la oración sabrá lo que es tener un corazón puro"; y Bunyan, "Si no eres una persona que ora, no eres cristiano"; y Richard Baxter, "La oración es el aliento de la nueva criatura"; y George Herbert, "La oración. ...la sangre del alma".

El soldado de mi cuento queda enmudecido para siempre, con su propia vida oculta iluminándole el alma, sin necesidad ya de pronunciar palabra alguna. Tal vez, si nos fuera dada una revelación así, enmudeceríamos, como él; pero, puesto que sólo se produce atisbos e intuiciones, escribimos, damos constancia de ello, para que duren más.» A lo largo de estas páginas nos vamos acercando a ese núcleo intimo en el que se forjan y cultivan los secretos que luego, con una mezcla de miedo, valor, audacia y osadía, irrumpirán en el mundo y serán distintos para cada lector, lográndose el milagro de que la fugaz visión del escritor se haya convertido, al fin, en visión para los demás, en visión imperecedera.
