The Vaqueiros de Alzada, a cattle-herding people in the Asturian mountains of Spain, have one of the highest suicide rates in Europe—and an attitude toward death that gives this statistic unusual meaning. This World, Other Worlds considers death among the Vaqueiros as a central cultural fact which reveals local ideas about the origin and destiny of humans, the relations of humans and animals, the configuration of the universe, and the nature of society. Interested chiefly in the conceptual and meaningful aspects of death, María Cátedra focuses on the cultural resources with which the Vaqueiros confront their own mortality—how they experience death and what this reveals about the way they see this world and other worlds. Applying sensitive ethnographic insight to a rich body of oral testimony, Cátedra discloses an unsuspected symbolic universe native to the Vaqueiros. Throughout the twentieth century, Spanish people have deployed conflicting sexual moralities in their struggle for political supremacy within the state. The Spanish Gypsies or Gitanos, who live at the very bottom of the Spanish socio-economic scale, have appropriated this concern with gender morality and, in the process, have reinvented themselves as the only honourable Spaniards. Although the Gitano gender ideology has a distinctively Spanish flavour, it revolves around a conceptualization of the female body that is radically different from that of other Spaniards. The subtle exploration of these acts of cultural invention is one of the original features of this important new ethnography. Another even more striking aspect of the work is the author's vision of the 'impermanent' nature of the Gitano social order and the absence of any representation of 'community' or 'society'. Unlike their non-Gypsy neighbours, Gitanos do not use concepts of tradition, territory or social harmony as bases for their singularity. Instead, they focus on the evaluation of personal moral performances in the present. In a cultural universe where all activities are markers of shared identity, and where personhood is always sexed, men and women continually enact the superiority of Gypsies over non-Gypsies. Through dress, manner and the management of emations, or at wedding rituals where the virginity of young brides is put to the test, the body works as the site of these processes.

This is the first study of a transhumant cattle-raising community in Spain. Transhumance is the seasonal moving of livestock to another region. This book shows the social and economic factors upon which the continued vitality of this mountain village is based: the use of communal summer pastures; the transhumant groups which walk the cattle to the winter pastures over the mountains; and the system of taking turns for many tasks within the village. The book analyses the sharp divisions between the more rigid organization of life within the village, and the organization of life outside the village in the transhumant group which goes to the winter pastures in Extramadura.

A mediados de la década de los 90 del siglo XX, –en los inicios del trabajo que aquí se presenta–, la noción de «comunidad» –que había facilitado a los antropólogos una identidad y justificado una particular movilidad por todo el planeta– se empezaba a desmoronar ante el empuje de los procesos de mundialización; procesos que invitaban a los sincretismos y las hibridaciones de toda clase y, por extensión, desanimaban a una comprensión de una comunidad como si de un islote cultural se tratase. Así las cosas, ¿era posible a finales del siglo XX llevar a cabo una etnografía en una comunidad tradicional sin perder de vista las clásicas visiones estructurales de la cultura pero añadiendo nuevos temas de estudio y nuevos posicionamientos teóricos? Esta obra fue un intento. El texto se construyó sin renegar de lo que podemos llamar «universo cultural pasiego» pero dando el peso necesario a los cambios que lo difuminan y lo vuelven poco discernible…, retomando temas tradicionales (la muerte, el trabajo, la enfermedad, la sociedad) pero incluyendo otros que lo son menos (la alimentación o la sexualidad)… y, en general, dando visibilidad a lo que era invisible… Así, el autor construye un texto histórico y contemporáneo, con fecha de caducidad, la que tarden en concretarse nuevos cambios que den una nueva vuelta de tuerca a una identidad (la pasiega) poco reconocible con los parámetros a los que estábamos acostumbrados.
