La historia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen tiene dos momentos importantes, primero nos situaremos en la época del Antiguo Testamento y el establecimiento del Monte Carmelo como lugar de veneración a la Virgen, quien se le apareció al profeta San Elías en forma de nube. Luego, nos centraremos en el Siglo XIII, cuando la Virgen le entregó su escapulario a San Simón Stock, momento en el cual comienza a venerarse a Nuestra Señora del Carmen, por la Orden Carmelita. Se le apareció la Bienaventurada Vírgen acompañada de una multitud de ángeles, llevando en sus benditas manos el escaputario de la Orden, diciendo estas palabras: “Recibe, hijo mío, el hábito de tu orden, privilegio sagrado para ti y para todos los religiosos del Carmen, prenda de mi amor materno, pacto de paz y eterna alianza. He aquí un signo de salvación y salvaguarda en los peligros. El que muera revestido de este hábito, no padecerá el fuego eterno”. Ella estaba vestida con hábito marrón y capa blanca, el mismo hábito que desde aquellos días de julio adoptó la Orden del Carmen en su honor. En una de sus manos sostenía al niño Jesús y en la otra llevaba el Santo escapulario símbolo de su amor eterno. “María le entregó un retazo de tela color pardo, que tenía la abertura para pasar la cabeza, pendía delante del pecho y también por detrás de la espalda. De ahí el nombre de Vírgen del escapulario”.
