D'entrée de jeu, il faut condamner fermement toutes les formes de racisme, incluant l'antisémitisme, le nazisme et les autres idéologies comparables. Le racisme constitue certainement l'un des produits les plus laids de l'esprit humain et, à l'époque contemporaine, il a généré et soutenu plusieurs systèmes politiques oppressifs. Quant aux nazis, qui se sont appuyés sur une version modernisée et raciale de l'antisémitisme, ils ont conçu et commis d'horribles crimes contre l'humanité qu'il ne faudrait jamais oublier. Cela étant dit, les historiens et historiennes travaillent à reconstruire le passé, ce qui nécessite des efforts visant à décrire et à expliquer le fonctionnement de l'esprit humain dans des contextes sociaux et culturels spécifiques. À cet égard, il faut remarquer que les nazis ont émergé dans le cadre de l'environnement particulier qui prévalait à la fin de la Première Guerre mondiale et qui, de toute évidence, allait influencer profondément les idées radicales de droite. L'idéologie nazie est alors apparue comme une synthèse qui accentuait les tendances fortes d'une dérive culturelle et morale. D'une part, elle s'est présentée comme une forme modernisée de pensée politique, branchée sur le paradigme scientifique et sur la translation sociale de la connaissance biologique. D'autre part, elle a conçu l'Europe comme un champ d'application du colonialisme européen. L'idéologie nazie trouvait son expression pratique dans une éthique entièrement basée sur une anthropologie de la différence, jetant des barrières infranchissables entre les individus et les peuples, et sur une biologie qui pouvait tout justifier. En même temps, elle soutenait une activité frénétique visant à surmonter l'année 1918 et à rejouer la Grande Guerre, pour que celle-ci aboutisse enfin à une conclusion heureuse. Pour les nazis, cette frénésie était liée à l'urgence d'étendre l'espace vital de l'Allemagne et de régler la question juive.
