‘Migrants who sell sex’ is a vast category which includes a variety of ever-changing and fluid experiences. These experiences, however, are often a secondary consideration when it comes to categorizing said migrants. Adapted from the homonymous publication-based doctoral thesis defended by the author at Ghent University on 30 June 2015, ‘Labelling migrants who sell sex’ explores the construction, manipulation and imposition of the labels of ‘victim of trafficking’ and ‘migrant sex worker’ and their consequences. Through a case study of Brazilian migrants in Spain and Portugal, this book delves into the motivations of both receiving/developed and sending/developing countries which shape their construction of the labels of migrants working in the sex industry and their application. It considers issues such as the varying definitions of these labels in national legislation and policies, the effect of the manipulation of labels on trafficking statistics, the problems faced by migrants who sell sex outside of the trafficking context and the treatment given to those labelled as (potential) victims of trafficking before and after reaching their country of destination.

The book focuses on volatile processes at the South African-Zimbabwean border that arise from practices of migration and income generating activities. The processes are influenced by neoliberal developments and controversial discourses on migration, commercial sexual services, and human trafficking. In this unstable environment, different actors continuously negotiate, trying to achieve stable positions. By addressing issues related to migration and income generating activities, they maneuver between legal rules and their own moral values and interests. In their attempt to classify incidents in the border context that are unclear to them, actors’ explanations are partly based on the concept of transnational human trafficking. Thereby, they transfer the impenetrability discursively associated with this concept to what they see as obscure cross-border migration, disconcerting sexual services, and other alienating economic activities. Alternatively, actors understand undocumented cross-border migration, commercial sexual services, and other illegalised income-generating activities as common everyday practices at the border and also assume that human trafficking does not play an important role there.

In the half-century before Poland’s long-awaited political independence in 1918, anxiety surrounding the country’s burgeoning sex industry fueled nearly constant public debate. The Devil’s Chain is the first book to examine the world of commercial sex throughout the partitioned Polish territories, uncovering a previously hidden conversation about sexuality, gender propriety, and social class. Keely Stauter-Halsted situates the preoccupation with prostitution in the context of Poland’s struggle for political independence and its difficult transition to modernity. She traces the Poles’ growing anxiety about white slavery, venereal disease, and eugenics by examining the regulation of the female body, the rise of medical authority, and the role of social reformers in addressing the problem of paid sex. Stauter-Halsted argues that the sale of sex was positioned at the juncture of mass and elite cultures, affecting nearly every aspect of urban life and bringing together sharply divergent social classes in what had long been a radically stratified society.
