From award-winning economic historian Sanford M. Jacoby, a fascinating and important study of the labor movement and shareholder capitalism Since the 1970s, American unions have shrunk dramatically, as has their economic clout. Labor in the Age of Finance traces the search for new sources of power, showing how unions turned financialization to their advantage. Sanford Jacoby catalogs the array of allies and finance-based tactics labor deployed to stanch membership losses in the private sector. By leveraging pension capital, unions restructured corporate governance around issues like executive pay and accountability. In Congress, they drew on their political influence to press for corporate reforms in the wake of business scandals and the financial crisis. The effort restrained imperial CEOs but could not bridge the divide between workers and owners. Wages lagged behind investor returns, feeding the inequality identified by Occupy Wall Street. And labor’s slide continued. A compelling blend of history, economics, and politics, Labor in the Age of Finance explores the paradox of capital bestowing power to labor in the tumultuous era of Enron, Lehman Brothers, and Dodd-Frank.

Divested written by Ken-Hou Lin and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-01-06 with Business & Economics categories.

Finance is an inescapable part of American life. From how one pursues an education, buys a home, runs a business, or saves for retirement, finance orders the lives of ordinary Americans. And as finance continues to expand, inequality soars. In Divested, Ken-Hou Lin and Megan Tobias Neely demonstrate why widening inequality cannot be understood without examining the rise of big finance. The growth of the financial sector has dramatically transformed the American economy by redistributing resources from workers and families into the hands of owners, executives, and financial professionals. The average American is now divested from a world driven by the maximization of financial profit. Lin and Neely provide systematic evidence to document how the ascendance of finance on Wall Street, Main Street, and among households is a fundamental cause of economic inequality. They argue that finance has reshaped the economy in three important ways. First, the financial sector extracts resources from the economy at large without providing economic benefits to those outside the financial services industry. Second, firms in other economic sectors have become increasingly involved in lending and investing, which weakens the demand for labor and the bargaining power of workers. And third, the escalating consumption of financial products by households shifts risks and uncertainties once shouldered by unions, corporations, and governments onto families. A clear, comprehensive, and convincing account of the forces driving economic inequality in America, Divested warns us that the most damaging consequence of the expanding financial system is not simply recurrent financial crises but a widening social divide between the have and have-nots.

Excerpt from Labor and Finance Revolution: Together With a Biography of the Author From time immemorial, a law-favored and a law-mak ing aristocratic few, have rolled in idle luxury at the expense of the toiling many. They have devised, promulgated, and continued in the human mind, political as well as religious dogmas, both degrading and enslaving, which have become so deeply and firmly rooted that it is next to impossible to eradicate them. Excerpt from Labour and National Finance Sound finance is the basis of national and commercial prosperity. Few people who have given thought to the subject will deny that the present financial position of the United Kingdom is one of the utmost gravity. There are, it is true, few outward and visible signs of personal or of public economy. This is one of the unfortunate features of the situation. During the war the working people, and the commercial and financial classes, have in the main enjoyed unparalleled prosperity. Wages have risen to unheard-of heights, and profits have soared to a point higher than that reached in the early years of the nineteenth century. This prosperity has been wholly artificial. Wages have been paid out of borrowed money, and profits have been made out of inflated credits. The country has been living on the proceeds of money raised on mortgages. Labor Before The Industrial Revolution written by Thomas Max Safley and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-09 with Business & Economics categories.

One cannot conceive of capitalism without labor. Yet many of the current debates about economic development leading to industrialization fail to directly engage with labor at all. This collection of essays strives to correct this oversight and to reintroduce labor into the great debates about capitalist development and economic growth before the Industrial Revolution. By attending to the effects of specific regulatory, technological, social and physical environments on producers and production in a set of specific industries, these essays use an “ecological” approach that demonstrates how productivity, knowledge and regime changed between 1400 and 1800. This book will be of interest to researchers in history, especially labor history, and European economic development.
