Laboratory Assessment of Vitamin Status provides a comprehensive understanding of the limitations of commonly used approaches used for the evaluation of vitamin status, reducing harm in the general health setting. It outlines the application of ‘Best Practice’ approaches to the evaluation of vitamin status, giving physicians and other healthcare professionals the opportunity to make evidence-based interventions. Nearly every metabolic and developmental pathway in the human body has a dependency on at least one micronutrient. Currently, the clinical utility of approaches taken by laboratories for the assessment of vitamin status is generally poorly understood, missing the opportunity to diagnosis vitamin deficiencies. This essential reference gives clinical and biomedical scientists an understanding of the limitations of commonly used approaches to the evaluation of vitamin status in the general health setting through change in practice. Nutritionists and dietitians gain an understanding of more sophisticated markers of vitamin status. Describes specialist assays in sufficient detail to enable laboratories to replicate what is being performed by expert groups Provides detailed information that supports laboratories in the setting up of methods for the evaluation of vitamin status Informs laboratories looking for third party providers of specialist investigations Provides an essential overview of reference ranges for each vitamin

Proper nutrition is the single most important component of preventative health care. Heart disease, diabetes, and other ailments are all linked to dietary habits. Accurate nutritional assessment can be a matter of life or death. Laboratory Tests for the Assessment of Nutritional Status explores the expanded number of nutrients that can now be evaluated. The author makes a compelling case for the practice and advancement of this critical health care tool. Nutritional assessment identifies undernutrition, overnutrition, specific nutrition deficiencies, and imbalances. Diligent assessment determines the appropriate nutrition intervention and monitors its effects. This book is a total revision of the 1974 version of the same title co -authored by Sauberlich. Since then, remarkable progress has been made on the methodologies applicable to nutrition status assessment and to the expanded number of nutrients that can be evaluated, especially trace elements. The introduction of high-performance liquid chromatography, amperometric detectors, and other technologies has advanced nutritional assessment by leaps and bounds. Today, nutritionists can gauge the value of microminerals, trace elements, and ultratrace elements. Sauberlich's revision updates the reader to the latest and most important trends in nutrition. These laboratory methods for the assessment of nutritional status are vital for identifying individuals as well as populations with nutritional risks.

During the period 29 June to 2 July 1980, a Workshop was held at Timberline Lodge, Mt. Hood, Oregon, entitled "Vitamin B-6 Analyt ical Methodology and Criteria for Assessing Nutritional Status". The papers which follow are the proceedings of that Workshop and represent the combined works of 36 scientists from across the United States and Canada. In addition to the 19 papers, there were seven short presentations which we consider to be at the very frontiers of analytical methods and status assessment for vitamin B-6. These reports discussed such areas as production of specific antibodies to the various vitamers, the synthesis of deuterated vitamers, comparisons of ultraviolet, fluorescence and elctrochemical deter minations of the vitamers and the identification of polyamine pyridoxal Schiff bases in urine. Those reports are not included in this book solely due to their highly tentative and preliminary findings, not because we considered them of any less importance than the papers presented herein. In fact, these reports may well provide the foundations upon which subsequent workshops are devel oped. The feeling for the need of such a Workshop in part grew out of a previous workshop held at the Letterman Army Institute of Research, San Fra"ncisco, California, 11-12 June 1976.
