Concrete and aggregates sampled on 20 field visits to Kansas Department of Transportation concrete paving projects constructed between 2010 and 2012 were tested to compare the KTMR-22 freeze-thaw durability of field-cast specimens with standard lab-cast specimens made with the same aggregates. No consistent differences were found between the field and lab specimen results, indicating that the results of the KTMR-22 (2012) Resistance of Concrete to Rapid Freezing and Thawing test are determined primarily by the durability of the aggregate used. Sampling concrete as delivered to the job site for freezing and thawing evaluation would provide assurance that the KTMR-22 test results reflect the performance of the aggregate used in the pavement.

Cycles of freezing and thawing can be extremely destructive to concrete structures. Continued research into more appropriate materials for use in severe environments has created a need for systematic testing of concrete samples exposed to this action. Testing machines have been constructed for this purpose but are designed to subject concrete samples to thermal cycling only. This project studied the feasibility of designing and constructing an automated freeze-thaw testing machine which would incorporate all aspects of freeze-thaw testing while ensuring that standards set forth in ASTM C666 are met. This report presents concept development, a detailed design, and the results of prototype testing, including estimated cost of the test apparatus for future production.

Specifications relating to frost resistance of concrete are generally based on laboratory tests of laboratory-produced concrete. Quality control for laboratory-produced concrete is usually significantly better than what can be achieved in the field, and laboratory freeze-thaw tests generally produce conditions that are not close to any real field exposure conditions. Field exposure testing is also problematic. Exposure conditions are not the same from one location to the next and may not even be the same from one year to the next at the same location. This paper attempts to provide guidance for interpreting the results of field tests of concrete exposed to natural freezing and thawing conditions. Types of frost damage as well as types of field test sites are discussed, and recommendations are provided for the use of field test results to modify frost-resistance specifications.
