As a part of a comprehensive study to evaluate the effects of elevated curing temperatures on hardened concrete properties, four non-air-entrained high-strength concrete (HSC) mixtures were prepared at temperatures ranging from 10 to 35°C. After mixing, 5.5 liters of concrete were placed inside a large polystyrene block to simulate temperature development in HSC structural members. The concrete temperature inside the block was continuously monitored with thermocouples, and collected temperature information was used to simultaneously temperature-match-cure (TMC) a series of compressive strength, scaling, and freeze-thaw specimens. The maximum recorded temperatures ranged from 59 to 69°C, depending on the fresh concrete temperature. Control specimens from each of the four mixtures were cured at room temperature. Based on the amount of residue collected during scaling tests in the presence of 3% NaCl solution, the TMC specimens were 7-63 times less resistant than the control specimens. However, during the freezing and thawing tests, seven of the eight TMC specimens outperformed their respective control specimens.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has developed a series of portland cement concrete mix designs for use on all infrastructure projects throughout the state. The standard forms of these mix designs differ in terms of the compressive strength they are expected to achieve after a curing period of 28 days. Because of the state's climate, one requirement common to every mix design used by ODOT, however, is high resistance to damage from cycles of freezing and thawing. Options currently permitted by ODOT for varying these mix designs include the use of different coarse aggregate sizes and substitution of a portion of the portland cement with additional fine aggregate or one of three mineral admixtures. These admixtures include fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and micro silica. All of these admixtures are produced from materials that are recycled from processes unrelated to concrete production. These processes include coal fired steam generation, pig iron production and silicon manufacturing.The objective of the research presented in this thesis was to evaluate the effect that mineral admixtures and coarse aggregate on ODOT Class C (4,000 psi) concrete in terms of compressive strength and freeze-thaw resistance. These evaluations were performed through laboratory testing of specimens cast from individual mixes. Information is provided on the materials used to create a concrete mix, as well as a brief summary of the development of mix design methodologies. Detailed descriptions of the freeze-thaw resistance and compressive strength testing are also included, with a discussion of the associated mechanisms of failure. Conclusions are offered based on trends observed from analysis of the test data. In general, the results of the testing indicate that freeze-thaw resistance is not detrimentally influenced by the addition of mineral admixtures or the size of the coarse aggregate used. Each of the mineral admixtures does affect the resulting concrete mix in slightly different ways, and one may be more desirable than another based on required performance. In addition, all of the mix designs studied attained average compressive strengths in excess of the target value of 4,000 psi.

This study, aimed at improving the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete, consists of three parts. Part I evaluates parameters affecting the freeze-thaw durability of concrete. A modification of the existing standard of method for determining the durability factor of concrete specimens is proposed, and a new procedure for fundamental transverse frequency (used in durability factor calculations) has been developed. Part II focuses on developing better methods for identifying nondurable aggregates, and has resulted in a rapid new test based on the hydraulic fracture of aggregates. Part III describes field experiments to evaluate the freeze-thaw resistance of a number of specified concrete mixes and the use of sealants to mitigate D-cracking. Preliminary field performance results are presented.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of low-permeability concrete, made with reduced water-to-binder ratios (w/b) and/or supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), on the need for air entrainment to achieve freezing-thawing (F-T) durability. In the present study, concrete mixes were made with different types of cement (Type I and IP), with or without fly ash replacement (15%), with different water-to-binder ratios (w/b=0.25, 0.35, 0.45 and 0.55), and with or without air entraining agent (AEA). All concrete mixtures were controlled to have a similar slump by using different dosages of superplasticizer. The rapid chloride permeability and F-T durability of the concrete samples were determined according to ASTM C1202 and ASTM C666A, respectively. The air void structure of the concrete was studied using the Air Void Analyzer, Rapid Air, and porosity tests (ASTM C642). In addition, the general concrete properties, such as slump, air content, unit weight, and 28-day compressive strength, were evaluated. The results indicate that all concrete mixes with proper air entrainment (ASTM C23 air content greater than or equal to 6%) showed good F-T resistance (durability factor greater than or equal to 86%). All concrete mixes without AEA showed poor F-T resistance (durability factor less than 40%), except for one mix that had very low permeability and high strength. This was the concrete made with Type IP cement and with a w/b of 0.25, which had a permeability of 520 coulombs and a compressive strength of 12,760 psi (88 MPa). There were clear relationships between the F-T durability and hardened concrete properties of non-air entrained concrete. However, such relationships did not exist in concrete with AEA. For concrete with AEA, good F-T durability was associated with an air void spacing factor less than or equal to 0.28 mm (by AVA) or less than or equal to 0.22 mm (by RapidAir).
