This interdisciplinary compilation of essays is a welcome tonic for the “jet lag” or cultural gap between Lacanian discourse's warm reception in Latin countries and the resistance Lacanian clinical applications have met with in the Anglophone world. Lacan in America illuminates important and dynamic debates within a cultural context that Lacan himself has modified. Rather than a made-simple approach, this dynamic collection invokes some of the hesitations, contradictions, and evolutions that appear to be the most exciting part of his legacy, in “polylogical” discussions by “Lacanians” who are not averse to a critical reexamination of major concepts or textual and political issues. Topics include: a regressive sexual science and a “postmodern condition,” technological mediation through seduction and resistance, the partisan issues beneath some of the resistances met by Lacanian discourse, and Lacan's revelations as responses to Freudian riddles. Demonstrating the vitality of Lacanian thought and its impact on disciplines, from mathematics to gay/lesbian studies, Lacan in America works to edify the fruit of Lacan's endless revision, an infinitely propagated transfiguration of his search for the meanings of truth. “Lucid and nonpartisan?[this collection] successfully takes the ideas and issues at the heart of Lacan's work and legacy and reinspects them through the lens offered by their transportation across the Atlantic, illustrating what has happened to them in their translation--and mistranslation--into and through American intellectual and cultural life.” -Daniel Gunn, Department of Comparative Literature and English, The American University of Paris

The Lacanian Review 12 explores American encounters with psychoanalysis. Following the 40th anniversary of Jacques Lacan's death, this volume collects histories of Lacan in the United States: how Lacan arrived, who listened, and what developed from transferences that moved through languages and across continents. Speaking about psychoanalysis in America, Lacan said, ". . .in truth everything can make itself heard in America." In analysis, hystories unfold in the gaps between what is said, what is heard, and the very act of speaking. TLR 12 offers some vantages of the living history of the Lacanian orientation in North America. Lacan journeyed to the U.S. three times, twice in 1966 and once in 1975. The Lacanian Review presents the first collected set of English translations of Lacan's North American Lectures-with topics spanning topology, the symptom, and the body-including a new translation of the "Kanzer Seminar" given at Yale University. There, Lacan refers to psychoanalysis as an "epidemic" involving "radical rupture" and "spread." The contemporary global pandemic provides a moment to consider what is at stake in the transmission of psychoanalysis. With the effects of globalization and the digital sphere, the spread of words across borders becomes increasingly instantaneous and unavoidable. How does psychoanalysis, which requires the presence of the body and an effect of time, find its place in an era disoriented by both rupture and hyperconnectivity? TLR asked Lacanian analysts, in and out of America, to give account of their work right now-how they take up Lacan's teachings, in their thinking, research, writing and contemporary practice. Arriving at the Statue of Liberty in 1909, Freud brought the first wave to North America. Over half a century later, Lacan crossed the Atlantic at a moment when psychoanalysis was suffering from its success. So we turn to Jacques-Alain Miller's first lecture in North America from 1984, newly established in bilingual format, "Lacan Clinician." Another wave to investigate, not of the plague, but of the symptom. Interviews with Josefina Ayerza and Ellie Ragland in this volume of TLR shed some light on the symptom, the one that is incurable, and doesn't stop becoming a cause for psychoanalysis. Lacan demonstrated that analysis can locate something irreducible and irreparable. In sojourns of psychoanalysis to and from worlds, old and new, we also discover the importance of what is untranslatable. It keeps us translating and returning to Lacan, Lacan in English, Lacan in America: American Lacan. The Lacanian Review (TLR) is a semiannual English-language journal of psychoanalysis, with bilingual (French - English) presentations of texts by Jacques Lacan and Jacques-Alain Miller. TLR publishes writing from international figures of the Lacanian orientation, featuring new theoretical developments in psychoanalysis, testimonies of the pass, dialogues with other discourses, and articles on contemporary culture, politics, art and science. Each issue explores a theme intersecting the symptoms of our era and emerging work in the New Lacanian School (NLS) and the World Association of Psychoanalysis (WAP). TLR is published by the New Lacanian School (amp-nls.org) and distributed by the Lacanian Compass Bookshop (lacaniancompass.com) and Eurl Huysmans (ecf-echoppe.com).

Jacques Lacan And American Sociology written by Duane Rousselle and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-24 with Social Science categories.

In this Palgrave Pivot, Duane Rousselle aims to disrupt the hold that pragmatist ideology has had over American sociology by demonstrating that the social bond has always been founded upon a fundamental and primordial bankruptcy. Using the Lacanian theory of “capitalist discourse,” Rousselle demonstrates that most of early American sociology suffered from an inadequate account of the “symbolic” within the mental and social lives of the individual subject. The psychoanalytic aspect of the social bond remained theoretically undeveloped in the American context. Instead it is the “image,” a product of the imaginary, which takes charge over any symbolic function. This intervention into pragmatic sociology seeks to recover the tradition of “grand theory” by bringing psychoanalytical and sociological discourse into fruitful communication with one another.

This book presents a new theory of American culture based not on the phenomenologically- and existentially-derived vocabularies of consciousness, which have dominated earlier accounts, but rather on a revitalized notion of the unconscious. Drawing on the writings of the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, Dean develops a theory of the constitution of the very notion of America itself as based on a complicated relation to the American landscape.

Lacanian Psychoanalysis And American Literature written by Raul Moncayo and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-29 with Psychology categories.

Lacanian Psychoanalysis and American Literature considers the psychoanalytic applications of three classic works of nineteenth-century literature, applying Lacanian concepts throughout. Moncayo imports the dynamisms and texture of three English and American stories with the aim of developing psychoanalytic theory, rather than simply confirming or applying previously adopted psychoanalytic concepts and theory. The author begins with The Purloined Letter by Edgar Allan Poe, assessing the differences between Derrida and Lacan’s analysis of this famous story. The book then considers The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, using James’ text for an in-depth analysis of Lacan’s Seminar on the Logic of the Fantasy, and Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, considering "passage à l'acte," and the objet a as the Wind and Heart of the Signifier. The authors use Lacan’s later theories to cast a new interpretative light on the stories, much as Lacan himself did with the work of James Joyce. Lacanian Psychoanalysis and American Literature will be of interest to academics and scholars of literary studies, psychoanalytic and Lacanian studies and Philosophy.

“Stages refreshing encounters between Lacanian psychoanalysis and its others: Kristeva, Heidegger, Derrida, or Foucault, to name just a few thinkers.” —Ewa Ziarek, author of An Ethics of Dissensus This book weaves together three themes at the intersection of Jacques Lacan and the philosophical tradition. The first is the question of time and memory. How do these problems call for a revision of Lacan’s purported “ahistoricism,” and how does the temporality of the subject in Lacan intersect with the questions of temporality initiated by Heidegger and then developed by contemporary French philosophy? The second question concerns the status of the body in Lacanian theory, especially in connection with emotion and affect, which Lacanian theory is commonly thought to ignore, but which the concept of jouissance was developed to address. Finally, it aims to explore, beyond the strict limits of Lacanian theory, possible points of intersection between psychoanalysis and other domains, including questions of race, biology, and evolutionary theory. The book also engages literary texts. Antigone, Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Hamlet, and even Wordsworth become the muses who oblige psychoanalysis and philosophy to listen once again to the provocations of poetry, which always disrupts our familiar notions of time and memory, of history and bodily or affective experience, and of subjectivity itself. “Shepherdson shows with admirable clarity, cogency and competence that psychoanalysis founds an anthropology of love, hate, desire, beauty, fantasy and memory while keeping its cutting edge in today’s discussions of war, race, sexual difference and tragedy. Thanks to him, thinking with Lacan becomes an act of enlightenment.” —Jean-Michel Rabaté, author of Lacan in America
