Retired after thirty-four years of teaching high school science, Ellen Washburn Gragg was enjoying her close-knit family and church community, traveling the world, quilting Life was good. Although she had no family history of breast cancer, no risk factors, and no warning, in 2006 she discovered her breast lump while traveling with the Friendship Force program in Japan, where the futon on which she and her husband slept made the lump more obvious and probably saved her life. She is now cancer-free. Ellen survived breast cancer by depending on both science and faith. As a scientist, she did extensive research, educating herself about the physiological process of treating her disease. As a Christian, she stepped into the embrace of her faith, her family, and her loving friends to sustain and nurture herself as she healed. By bringing both these arteries into the heart of her challenge, she was able to proceed confidently and wisely on her path to becoming cancer-free. In Lady of Hope, Ellen makes the science accessible and her faith inspirational. She shares not only her personal journey but specific information and coping strategies, from eating gingersnaps to relieve nausea to the Bible verses that have given her comfort and peace. Ellen's message keeps echoing through the book: be faithful and be informed. Cancer patients and caregivers will discover how to empower themselves mentally and spiritually, and learn why, at the end of her treatments, Ellen still says, "Life is good!"

This is a completely revised and updated edition of SR Books' classic text, Problems in Modern Latin American History. This book has been brought up to date by Professors John Charles Chasteen and James A. Wood to reflect current scholarship and to maximize the book's utility as a teaching tool. The book is divided into 13 chapters, with each chapter dedicated to addressing a particular 'problem' in modern Latin America-issues that complement most survey texts. Each chapter includes an interpretive essay that frames a clear central issue for students to tackle, along with excerpts from historical writing that advance alternative-or even conflicting-interpretations. In addition, each chapter contains primary documents for students to analyze in relation to the interpretive issues. This primary material includes passages of Latin American fiction in translation, biographical sketches, and images. Designed as a supplemental text for survey courses on Latin American history, this book's provocative 'problems' approach will engage students, evoke lively classroom discussion, and promote critical thinking.

Aztec Goddesses And Christian Madonnas written by Joseph Kroger and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-28 with Religion categories.

The face of the divine feminine can be found everywhere in Mexico. One of the most striking features of Mexican religious life is the prevalence of images of the Virgin Mother of God. This is partly because the divine feminine played such a prominent role in pre-Hispanic Mexican religion. Goddess images were central to the devotional life of the Aztecs, especially peasants and those living in villages outside the central city of Tenochtitlan (present day Mexico City). In these rural communities fertility and fecundity, more than war rituals and sacrificial tribute, were the main focus of cultic activity. Both Aztec goddesses and the Christian Madonnas who replaced them were associated, and sometimes identified, with nature and the environment: the earth, water, trees and other sources of creativity and vitality. This book uncovers the myths and images of 22 Aztec Goddesses and 28 Christian Madonnas of Mexico. Their rich and symbolic meaning is revealed by placing them in the context of the religious worldviews in which they appear and by situating them within the devotional life of the faithful for whom they function as powerful mediators of divine grace and terror.
