This checklist, which is designed to help you identify the many animals in the park, includes 40 fishes, 15 amphibians, 29 reptiles, 167 birds, and 28 mammals. Several of the animals found in the park are on the rare and endangered species list in Missouri. Located in the Pike Run Hills of southeast Missouri, St. Francois State Park contains many different types of habitats for plants and animals. The Big River and its tributaries have created a landscape of deeply dissected hills. Most of the 2,736 acre park is covered with a thick oak-hickory forest which is interspersed with glads, spring and bluffs along the river. Because of the underlying bedrock, there are numerous spring seeps that nurture special habitats known as fens or wet meadows. These spring seeps also feed Coonville Creek, a high quality Ozark stream that contains more than 30 species of fish. This checklist contains 22 mammals, 158 birds, 23 reptiles, nine amphibians and 30 fishes that have been identified in the park. Park located in Saint Francois County near Bonne Terre.
