Lakes of New York State, Volume III: Ecology of the Lakes of East-Central New York discusses the limnology of three lakes in the New York State—Otsego Lake (Glimmerglass), Canadarago Lake, and Saratoga Lake. This book is divided into three chapters. Chapter 1 describes Otsego Lake as one of the deeper lakes in the state with a maximum depth of 50.5 m. The historical data, ecosystem, geography, and hydrology of Canadarago Lake are discussed in Chapter 2. The last chapter categorizes Saratoga Lake as a productive lake exhibiting the classic symptoms of cultural eutrophication—low water clarity, growth of nuisance algae, hypolimnetic oxygen depletion, and the presence of fecal bacteria in the water. Growing interest in hydrobiology and the resulting increase in facilities for education and research have made an up-to-date directory of hydrobiological laboratories in North America a necessity. The present directory, listing 187 laboratories, with provisions for instruction and research and scope of activities, is designed to be useful not only research scholars but to young scientists in training and to visiting investigators as well. The address, senior officer, institutional affiliation, objectives, scope of activities, season of operation, and environments stressed are given for each laboratory. In addition, major research facilities, capital equipment, and provisions for publications are indicated as well as descriptions of accommodations available, instructional program, teaching facilities and scientific staff. Biographical sketches of 1,300 personnel give institutional affiliation, mailing address, field of specialization, current research project, and field experience by geographical region. A cross-reference index lists each laboratory under its official name, the sponsoring agency, and the area in which it is located. Data for all laboratories are broken down into a treatment of inland laboratories (fresh-water) and coastal laboratories (marine), and finally segregated by geographical area.

The Far Northeast, a peninsula incorporating the six New England states, New York east of the Hudson, Quebec south of the St. Lawrence River and Gulf of St. Lawrence, and the Maritime Provinces, provided the setting for a distinct chapter in the peopling of North America. Late Pleistocene Archaeology and Ecology in the Far Northeast focuses on the Clovis pioneers and their eastward migration into this region, inhospitable before 13,500 years ago, especially in its northern latitudes. Bringing together the last decade or so of research on the Paleoindian presence in the area, Claude Chapdelaine and the contributors to this volume discuss, among other topics, the style variations in the fluted points left behind by these migrating peoples, a broader disparity than previously thought.
