Reaching beyond sensational headlines, Land of the Unconquerable at last offers a three-dimensional portrait of Afghan women. In a series of wide-ranging, deeply reflective essays, accomplished scholars, humanitarian workers, politicians, and journalists—most with extended experience inside Afghanistan—examine the realities of life for women in both urban and rural settings. They address topics including food security, sex work, health, marriage, education, poetry, politics, prisoners, and community development. Eschewing stereotypes about the burqa, the contributors focus instead on women’s empowerment and agency, and their struggles for peace and justice in the face of a brutal ongoing war. A fuller picture of Afghanistan’s women past and present emerges, leading to social policy suggestions and pragmatic solutions for a peaceful future.

The first comprehensive look at youth living in a country attempting to rebuild itself after three decades of civil conflict, Children of Afghanistan relies on the research and fieldwork of twenty-one experts to cover an incredible range of topics. Focusing on the full scope of childhood, from birth through young adulthood, this edited volume examines a myriad of issues: early childhood socialization in war and peace; education, literacy, vocational training, and apprenticeship; refugee life; mental and physical health, including disabilities and nutrition; children’s songs, folktales, and art; sports and play; orphans; life on the streets; child labor and children as family breadwinners; child soldiers and militarization; sexual exploitation; growing up in prison; marriage; family violence; and other issues vital to understanding, empowerment, and transformation. Children of Afghanistan is the first volume that not only attempts to analyze the range of challenges facing Afghan children across class, gender, and region but also offers solutions to the problems they face. With nearly half of the population under the age of fifteen, the future of the country no doubt lies with its children. Those who seek peace for the region must find solutions to the host of crises that have led the United Nations to call Afghanistan “the worst place on earth to be born.” The authors of Children of Afghanistan provide child-centered solutions to rebuilding the country’s cultural, social, and economic institutions.

Women and Leadership around the World is the third volume in a new series of books (Women and Leadership: Research, Theory, and Practice) that will is now being published to inform leadership scholars and practitioners. The purpose of this volume is to explore areas of women’s leadership in four regions around the world: the Middle East, Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific. Hence, we have included 14 chapters that cover a wide range of important topics relevant to women and leadership within specific contexts around the world. Our goal for this volume is to provide readers with explorations of women’s experiences as leaders, including recent research studies, analysis and interpretation of statistics unpacking the status of women in various sectors and countries, stories of influential women leaders with national or local spheres of influence, and including recommendations for positive change to increase women’s access to positions of authority. The volume contributors use various theories and conceptualizations to problematize, historicize, and analyze women’s limited access to power, and their agency as leaders from the grassroots to the national scene, from education to non-profits and business organizations. Overall, the book contributes interpretations of the status of women in various countries, presenting the stories behind the numbers and statistics and uncovering not only challenges but also opportunities for resiliency and effectiveness as leaders. The authors offer recommendations for change that cross national boundaries, such as structural changes in organizations that would open the door for more women to access positions of authority and be effective as leaders. It is rare to find a book with such a diverse array of topics and countries, making this a timely contribution to the literature on women and leadership. The authors remind us to continue to expand the literature base on women and leadership, drawing from both qualitative and quantitative studies as well as conceptual explorations of women as leaders in different countries, regions, indigenous communities, and across different sectors. The more we know, the better informed will be our efforts to create appropriate leadership development activities and experiences for emerging women leaders and girls around the world. This book contributes significantly to that very effort.

Stop trying to become who you are already are! "Prone to Love is a straightforward and disarming, a breath of fresh air!" --Bonnie Chavda, Founder and Pastor of All Nations Church If you have been around Christian circles long enough, you have heard the phrase, “child of God.” As believers, we use language like this all the time describing our relationship with the Father—but do we really know what it means? What if we actually lived out of the relationship and reality we talked, preached, and sung about? Easy. We would change the world. The roadblock preventing us from stepping into our identities as sons and daughters of God is not lack of discipline, resources, or creative ideas. We have all of this… What’s missing? To discover who you are, first, you must know Who the Father is and what He’s like. "You can't read Prone to Love and not recall the goodness of God in your life." -- Shawn Ring, Executive Pastor, Gateway Church

To The Arctic written by Jeannette Mirsky and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1970 with History categories.

"Who Reached the North Pole First?" A recent article in the New York Times (February 17, 1997) presented new evidence from the journals of Admiral Robert E. Peary and Dr. Frederick A. Cook that sheds light on this long-argued debate. Questioning whether the journal entries are truthful, new theories indicate that neither explorer was first, despite their individual claims. To the Arctic contributes valuable information to this debate in its lively narrative of Arctic exploration from the time of the ancient Greeks to the mid-1940s. Revealing stories of the many men who attempted to map the lands or search for means to live there, Mirsky describes the weather and resources they encountered, the temptations and odds of success, and the role of nationalism and individual character in the many conflicting accounts of Arctic exploration. "Excellent. . . . This is a book which anyone interested in almost any facet of the north will find of value."—William Cody, Canadian Field Naturalist "A book filled with adventure."—Daily News Journal

While other ladies turn their country homes into soldiers’ hospitals and host charity bazaars to fund the war effort, Linley struggles just to keep Wolford Abbey afloat. Driving tractors and managing servants is not the life she dreamed of in those magical days before the war. She yearns to put down the teacups, pick up a trowel, and follow in her father’s footsteps as an archaeologist—and never is this more apparent than with her husband away at the Front. Patrick doesn’t allow himself to remember life during peacetime. To think of anything other than war and death would be too painful. If he is to survive, he must not look back. He must push forward over the top and into the horrors that await him. But after an injury saves him from death at the hands of the Germans, Patrick is forced to reconcile his life as a soldier with his responsibilities as a husband. The strength of their love will be tested as old friends and bad memories threaten to tear the couple apart. Through it all, the trenches of the Great War, quiet Worcestershire countryside, and bustling streets of Cairo await in Linley and Patrick’s second adventure. *** Series Reading Order: A Love That Never Tires (1913) My Unconquerable Soul (1919) Our Land of Beyond (1921) Villa Georgiana (1922) *** Subjects include: Egypt, Romance, Edwardian era, 20th century, Egyptology, Archaeology, British Colonialism, Adventure, Historical romance, First World War, England, Aristocracy, Voyage, Redemption
