Mountain agriculture is a socially and culturally unique system, but also a regionally important economic sector. In a globalising world, it is clear that fertile areas on all continents will always be used to produce large quantities of agricultural products in order to feed the world and, increasingly, provide biomass as a source of energy. It is far less clear, however, how land use in steep and more peripheral regions will evolve. By definition, farmland in mountain areas is more difficult to work because of steep slopes and missing accessibility. Climate conditions and poor soil quality often add to these adverse conditions. Through overcoming limited views from one region only or from one discipline, this book intends to draw a first truly international perspective on the issue of mountain farming.

Zudem wird die geschichtliche Entwicklung der Berglandwirtschaft betrachtet, um im Anschluss näher auf die strukturellen Veränderungen der Berglandwirtschaft im Alpenraum Bezug zu nehmen. Anschließend wird sich mit aktuellen Entwicklungen, sowie Strukturen und Funktionen der Berglandwirtschaft beschäftigt. Zum Schluss geht es um die Frage, wie Berglandwirtschaft nachhaltig gefördert werden kann und wie diese in Zukunft aussehen kann. Generell kann in diesem Skript nicht über die gesamte landwirtschaftliche Vielfalt des Alpenraumes erschöpfend berichtetet werden. Jedoch bietet die Betrachtung ausgewählter Regionen die Möglichkeit einen Überblick über die Veränderung der Berg- und Almlandwirtschaft im Laufe der Zeit und die aktuellen Herausforderungen und deren Bewältigung zu erhalten. Letztendlich sollen auch zukünftige Entwicklungen beleuchtet werden.

If landscape visualizations are applied as tools for participation, they should provide a high level of interactivity to facilitate planning process and outcomes. This book presents evidence for this hypothesis through demonstrative case studies in the Entlebuch UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Switzerland. In collaborative workshops, interactive real-time visualizations were used to respond directly to the dialogue, and long-term climate change impacts were illustrated through collapsing time animations. The author, Dr. Olaf Schroth, is a researcher at the University of British Columbia and has studied both geodesy and planning in Hanover, Hamburg and Newcastle upon Tyne. Since then, he has been working at the interface of planning and 3D visualization, and the book summarizes his work in the EU project VisuLands (2003-2006) and his PhD at ETH Zurich. His research is not technology-driven but rather raises critical issues from a planning perspective. Therefore, the results and hands-on recommendations address researchers as well as practitioners in planning, architecture, geovisualization, geography, cartography and computer visualization.

Da Bilder wesentlich anschaulicher sind als abstrakte Karten, werden sie auch zunehmend in der Landschaftsplanungspraxis eingesetzt, um den Austausch zwischen Experten und Laien zu unterstützen. Das gelungene Einbinden und Informieren der lokalen Akteure ist entscheidend für eine wirkungsvolle Partizipation und damit letztlich für die Umsetzung landschaftsplanerischer Massnahmen. Vor allem GIS-basierten 3D Landschaftsvisualisierungen wird ein grosses Potenzial zugeschrieben, die Kommunikation planerischer Inhalte in partizipativen Prozessen zur Planung der Landschaftsentwicklung effektiv zu unterstützen. Es stellt sich jedoch die Frage, wie die räumliche Information mit Hilfe von 3D Landschaftsvisualisierungen für planerische Laien aufbereitet werden soll. Denn nicht ein höchstmöglicher "Realismus" ist entscheidend für ihre Effektivität, sondern ein höchstmöglicher Informationsgewinn. Die technischen Möglichkeiten übersteigen das Wissen über die korrekte Anwendung. Der limitierende Faktor ist die Fähigkeit des Rezipienten, die im Bild transportierte Information zu erfassen und zu verarbeiten. Wenn die planungsrelevante Information verstanden werden soll, muss eine auf die Adressaten ausgerichtete didaktische Aufbereitung erfolgen. Deshalb ist eine Verknüpfung von Erkenntnissen aus den Kommunikationswissenschaften mit den Visualisierungstechniken zwingend. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden Darstellungsprinzipien für 3D Landschaftsvisualisierungen zum Einsatz in partizipativen Planungsprozessen konkretisiert. Ausgehend vom Informationsbedarf und den technischen Möglichkeiten der Visualisierung sowie der Umsetzung von Prinzipien der Kommunikationswissenschaften werden konkrete Empfehlungen formuliert und in Fallstudien getestet. Die Ergebnisse sind handlungsorientiert. Sie bieten Raum- und Landschaftsplanern eine praktische Orientierungshilfe zur Aufbereitung von 3D Landschaftsvisualisierungen für partizipative Workshops.
