Garrett Stewart begins The Deed of Reading with a memory of his first hesitant confrontation, as a teenager, with poetic density. In that early verbal challenge he finds one driving force of literature: to make language young again in its surprise, coming alive in each new event of reading. But what exactly happens in the textual encounter to make literary phrasing resonate so deeply with readers? To take the measure of literary writing, The Deed of Reading convenes diverse philosophic commentary on the linguistics of literature, with stress on the complementary work of Stanley Cavell and Giorgio Agamben. Sympathetic to recent ventures in form-attentive analysis but resisting an emphasis on so-called surface reading, Stewart explores not some new formalism but the internal pressures of language in formation, registering the verbal infrastructure of literary prose as well as verse. In this mode of "contextual" reading, the context is language itself. Literary phrasing, tapping the speech act’s own generative pulse, emerges as a latent philosophy of language in its own right, whereby human subjects, finding no secure place to situate themselves within language, settle for its taking place in, through, and between them. Stewart watches and hears this dynamics of wording played out in dozens of poems and novels over two centuries of English literary production—from Wordsworth and Shelley to Browning and Hopkins, from Poe and Dickens through George Eliot, Conrad, James, and on to Toni Morrison. The Deed of Reading offers a revisionary contribution to the ethic of verbal attention in the grip of "deep reading."

This book examines Heidegger's controversial relation to politics as it grows out of his understanding of his predecessors in German Idealism, most notably, Hegel. This way of developing a dialogue between Heidegger and Hegel on the issue of politics provides an important context for questioning the former's link with National Socialism. Yet the book does not simply condemn Heidegger for his Nazi involvement nor claim that his thinking is free from dangerous political implications. On the contrary, a second level of questioning asks whether Heidegger's philosophy can be appropriated in alternative contexts which permit the affirmation of democratic principles. Thus the book concludes by examining the import which Heidegger's thought has on cultivating such democratic motifs as freedom of speech and civil disobedience. The book is especially of interest to advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars in the areas of German idealism, phenomenology, social and political philosophy, and the history of philosophy.

In The Beginning Was The Deed written by Harry Redner and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-26 with Philosophy categories.

Now that the collective death of mankind has become a possibility, no other thought can remain unimpaired. Harry Redner traces historically the onset of this acute state of Nihilism from what might be called the Faustian revolution, symbolized by Faust's pronouncement "In the beginning was the Deed." Redner reflects on the passage of the three main Fausts, from Marlowe's to Goethe's to Thomas Mann's, and this reflection serves as the dramatic metaphor for a review of the relationship of Progress to Nihilism in modern civilization. Starting with an exposition of the key Faustian thinkers--Marx, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, and Heidegger--the book proceeds by examining the dominant modern ideas on Man, Time, and Nihilism with reference to Foucault, Derrida, and Althusser. It focuses on Language, which is a key preoccupation of all these thinkers but has not yet been taken far enough to afford a basis for the explanation of fundamental changes in civilization. Language in its creative and destructive functions, as constituting both the conscious and unconscious of a culture, is reconceived so as to account for the hidden link between Progress and Nihilism. The author then explores sociologically the dominant aspects of Progress in terms of the ideas of Weber, Adorno, and Marcuse on Technology, Subjectivity, and Activism. Finally, an extensive literary study of the three main Fausts concludes with a coda on the future of music. In the Beginning Was the Deed is lucid and direct, tinged with wry humor. Redner represent Man in the nuclear age and reflects on that representation, seeking to comprehend our era, draw ethical and political conclusions, and explore action as a response to the threat of annihilation. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,3, University of Bonn (Institut für Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Keltologie), course: Issues in Linguistics: Macrolinguistics "Sociolinguistics", language: English, abstract: In this term paper I will look for the relationship between language and status or language and power in the episode "A Friend in Deed" from the Lieutenant Columbo series. In this episode, the Lieutenant has to investigate against his own boss, Commissioner Mark Halperin, who covered up one murder and commits one himself. I have chosen this episode, because I am a big fan of the Columbo series and because I think it is very interesting to see how both of them act during the investigations. Halperin wants to cover the truth by blaming a burglar, while Columbo finds out that something is wrong and his boss may be suspicious. Through the hierarchical background they try to manipulate each other. Halperin stops Columbo every time he finds out new traces that lead to the Commissioner as the murderer by telling him to look for a burglar. This again leads Columbo to the conclusion that his boss might be involved in the murder cases. But still, he has to follow his orders, because he is the subordinate and Halperin is the superior of the two. So he uses his possibilities of "using power" in a very subliminal, careful way, by telling the Commissioner his new developments every time he finds out something new, which again makes the Commissioner use his power to give him orders to stop investigating into that direction. But nevertheless, Columbo manipulates him this way and in the end he can arrest him as a murderer. The plot of the episode can be found in the appendix. For research I have looked up some books concerning "power and language" or "status and language", explaining the linguistic background between language and power and giving definitions of the relationship between it. First of all, I will give some short background information about the Columbo series, and then I will give some explanations concerning the relationship between language and power with the background of the chosen literature. After that I will describe how I use the results from the theoretical part for the analysis of two chosen dialogues between the Lieutenant and the Commissioner, which can be found in the appendix. This leads to the discussion of the results of the analysis and in the conclusion I will have a look on how language and power work together in this context and if the theories from the literature work in dialogues between superior and subordinate.

Thoughts & Deeds examines the debate surrounding the increasingly contentious role of language as both an object and method of modern political inquiry. For a growing number of scholars in political theory in particular, linguistic developments threaten to «deconstitute», to depoliticize what is and should remain a properly political field. The most popular linguistic schools of political thought - those associated with the writings of Wittgenstein and Habermas - are examined in light of these and related charges. As a way of testing both claims and criticisms, the linguistic assumptions and practices of Hobbes and Tocqueville are reconstructed and analyzed. In each case, language is revealed central to their goals of understanding, explaining and influencing political developments.

Judith Butler Ethics Law Politics written by Elena Loizidou and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-11 with Law categories.

The first to use Judith Butler’s work as a reading of how the legal subject is formed, this book traces how Butler comes to the themes of ethics, law and politics analyzing their interrelation and explaining how they relate to Butler’s question of how people can have more liveable and viable lives. Acknowledging the potency and influence of Butler’s ‘concept’ of gender as process, which occupies a well developed and well discussed position in current literature, Elena Loizidou argues that the possibility of people having more liveable and viable lives is articulated by Butler within the parameters of a sustained agonistic relationship between the three spheres of ethics, law and politics. Suggesting that Butler’s rounded understanding of the interrelationship of these three spheres will enable critical legal scholarship, as well as critical theory more generally, to consider how the question of life’s unsustainable conditions can be rethought and redressed, this book is a key read for all students of legal ethics, political philosophy and social theory.
