This book introduces a framework for examining bilingual identity and presents the cases of seven individual children from a study of young students’ bilingual identities in an Australian primary school. The new Bilingual Identity Negotiation Framework brings together three elements that influence bilingual identity development – sociocultural connection, investment and interaction. The cases comprise individual stories about seven young, bilingual students and are complemented by some more general investigations of bilingual identity from a whole class of students at the school. The framework is explained and supported using the students’ stories and offers readers a new concept for examining and thinking about bilingual identity. This book builds upon past and current theories of identity and bilingualism and expands on these to identify three interlinking elements within bilingual identity. The book highlights the need for greater dialogue between different sectors of research and education relating to languages and bilingualism. It adds to the increasing call for collaborative work from the different fields interested in language learning and teaching such as TESOL, bilingualism, and language education. Through the development of the framework and the students’ stories in this study, this book shows how multilingual children in one school in Australia developed their identities in association with their home and school languages. This provides readers with a model for examining bilingual identity in their own contexts, or a theoretical construct to consider in their thinking on bilingualism, language and identity.

Are immigrant children, who have recently come to the U.S., supposed to assimilate into English as fast as possible or should they maintain their native language when entering the American school system? Unfortunately, current English immersion and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs tend to choose the first option. In most cases, minority language students (those who speak a language other than English) are placed in programs which are of a subtractive nature: Rapid transition into the English language not only replaces the native language of these children, but also neglects the culture and heritage connected with that language. Besides this serious concern for minority language students, there is another problem with lan-guage learning in the U.S.: Language majority students (those who only speak Eng-lish) receive an average of two years of foreign language instruction in high school, which does not even come close to develop fluency (Frengel: 2003: 47). All things considered, the U.S. seriously risks becoming a monolingual society in a multicul-tural world. A program which has the potential to solve this problem is the so-called Two-Way Immersion Program (TWI). The special advantage of a TWI program is that it integrates language minority and language majority students in one classroom and provides instruction to all students in both the minority as well as the majority lan-guage. The central goal of these programs is full bilingualism of both groups of stu-dents. Due to the high rates of immigrants entering the U.S. in the last 20 years, the need for TWI programs has increased enormously. It is common for scholarly and mainstream discourses on dual language education in the US to frame these programs as inherently socially transformative and to see their proliferation in recent years as a natural means of developing more anti-racist spaces in public schools. In contrast, this book adopts a raciolinguistic perspective that points to the contradictory role that these programs play in both reproducing and challenging racial hierarchies.
