Not much of what we know comes from direct experience but rather from others' testimony or input. Therefore, distinguishing trustworthy sources from those are not is an important skill both adults and children should posses in order not to be misled. One way to identify the credibility or reliability of the information is to focus on the source of the information, such as perceptual access or communication (hearsay). The present series of studies focus on the scope of children's evaluation of source information in verbal messages. While some languages, such as English, encode the source information by lexical means; i.e., I saw that he left, other languages such as Turkish or Bulgarian code that information by grammatical means; i.e, evidentiality markers. The cross-linguistic design (Turkish vs. English) in the present studies allows for exploring the interaction of language (evidential vs. non-evidential) with children's source reasoning and resistance to misinformation by others. Specifically, the studies explore whether children growing up in a language in which source cues are marked grammatically would be more alert to others' informational states compared to children growing up in a language which needs additional words to code the source distinctions. In a modified misinformation paradigm, the findings revealed that 4-, 6and 8-year old Turkish-speaking children were sensitive to whether the misinformation comes from perception and or communication. That is, Turkish children were more resistant to new information if it came from a communication (hearsay) source as opposed to a direct perception source. English-speaking children did not take the source into account until 8 years-of-age. Moreover, Turkish-speaking 4-year-olds were more resistant to misinformation when it came from a hearsay source when compared to their English-speaking peers. These findings reveal an influence of language in children's developing understanding of source information and evaluation of information by others. The results raise curious questions about the effect of language on children's non-verbal conceptual development for future directions.

This book contains the proceedings of the First International Sym posium on Suggestion and Suggestibility, held at the University of Giessen in the Federal Republic of Germany, July 7-111987, upon the initiative of and organized by Dr. V. A. Gheorghiu and Dr. P. Netter. I regret that for personal reasons I was unable to accept his kind invita tion to attend, for Dr. Gheorghiu and I are old friends. I am pleased, however, to have this opportunity to call attention to the significance of this volume. Most of the chapters were presented in approximately their present form at the symposium, though some have been extensi vely revised for publication. It was a wise choice to divide the papers into four major sections. - I. Theoretical and Historical Perspectives, II. Assessment and Indivi dual Differences of Suggestibility, III. Psychophysiological Aspects of Suggestibility, and IV. Social and Cognitive Aspects of Suggestive Processes - each with a summarizing commentary. In view of the variety and difficulty of the individual papers, it is a help to have the integration provided by these commentaries - on Part I by Sheehan (Chap. 7), on Part II by Lundy (Chap. 13), on Part III by Edmonston (Chap. 19), and on Part IV by Fiedler (Chap. 30).

Suggestopedia And Language written by W. Jane Bancroft and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-06-27 with Performing Arts categories.

First published in 1999. Language-acquisition methods are based on the way in which children learn their native tongue, a “successful” approach in which listening comprehension precedes speaking which, in turn, precedes reading and writing. Elements based on unconscious assimilation or indirect attention—among them, Soviet hypnopedia, the Tomatis Method and Sophrology. Methods for unconscious assimilation—and, in particular, Suggestopedia, its variants, its adaptations and its background elements—are the subject of this book. Part I of Suggestopedia and Language Acquisition deals with the theories behind Suggestology and Suggestopedia, in addition to the original suggestopedic language class which was developed in Bulgaria in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Part II discusses the various background and complementary elements to the original version of Suggestopedia: suggestion, yoga, baroque music and music therapy, the teacher as Pygmalion, nonverbal communication and brain research. The third section examines related methods based on unconscious assimilation: Soviet sleep-learning, Sophrology, the Tomatis Approach and the Suzuki Method for music learning. In the fourth and final section, versions and variants are discussed.

Grounded in the latest clinical and developmental knowledge, this book brings together leading authorities to examine the critical issues that arise when children and adolescents become involved in the justice system. Chapters explore young people’s capacities, competencies, and special vulnerabilities as victims, witnesses, and defendants. Key topics include the reliability of children’s abuse disclosures, eyewitness testimony, interviews, and confessions; the evolving role of the expert witness; the psychological impact of trauma and of legal involvement; factors that shape jurors’ perceptions of children; and what works in rehabilitating juvenile offenders. Policies and practices that are not supported by science are identified, and approaches to improving them are discussed.

Relational Remembering written by Sue Campbell and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Medical categories.

Tracing the impact of the 'memory wars' on science and culture, Relational Remembering offers a vigorous philosophical challenge to the contemporary skepticism about memory that is their legacy. Campbell's work provides a close conceptual analysis of the strategies used to challenge women's memories, particularly those meant to provoke a general social alarm about suggestibility. Sue Campbell argues that we cannot come to an adequate understanding of the nature and value of memory through a distorted view of rememberers. The harmful stereotypes of women's passivity and instability that have repopulated discussions of abuse have led many theorists to regard the social dimensions of remembering only negatively, as a threat or contaminant to memory integrity. Such models of memory cannot help us grasp the nature of harms linked to oppression, as these models imply that changed group understandings of the past are incompatible with the integrity of personal memory. Campbell uses the false memory debates to defend a feminist reconceptualization of personal memory as relational, social, and subject to politics. Memory is analyzed as a complex of cognitive abilities and social/narrative activities where one's success or failure as a rememberer is both affected by one's social location and has profound ramifications for one's cultural status as a moral agent.

The Oxford Handbook Of Developmental Psychology And The Law written by Allison D. Redlich and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-22 with Psychology categories.

"In the Oxford Handbook of Developmental Psychology and the Law, eminent scholars from varied disciplines detail how developmental science and the law shape one another across the lifespan. The chapters address fundamental questions about how human development influences laws and practices in the legal system and how the law and its practices influence development. The chapters, as well, reveal how the potential for, and consequences of, victimization and perpetration-whether they be criminal or civil acts-are impacted by and impact development. The diversity of topics, range of influences across the lifespan, and complexities of developmental and legal influences are on display throughout the volume. In Section I, which spanned Infancy and Childhood to Adolescence, authors covered such topics as prenatal and infant abuse; the development of antisocial behavior in children and adolescents; questioning of minor victims, witnesses, and suspects; treatment of youth in juvenile, criminal, and specialty courts but also in immigration, custody, and adoption hearings, and finally in schools and prisons. In Section II, which spanned Adulthood to Aging, authors addressed some of the same topics, but here from the perspective of younger and older adults. These include antisocial behavior in adults, the experiences of elder adults as victim/witnesses, and experiences in prison, especially among parents and the elderly. Other topics were covered as well, including persons with developmental disabilities involvement in the courts, reentry transitions after incarceration, and reproductive and end-of-life legal rights. Across this comprehensive volume, authors demonstrate the immense value of research for policy and practice and viewing legal involvement through the lens of lifespan development"--
