Hermann Lang's Language and the Unconscious is the standard introduction to the "philosophical" psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan in Germany. His treatise advances the thesis that the unifying force behind the Lacanian oeuvre is the efficacy of the "talking cure" itself. This approach allows the reader to understand Lacan's relationship to Freud, to structuralism and to the philosophical concerns of Heidegger and Gadamer. Finally, Lang's interpretation of Lacan also has returns for students' of hermeneutics and literary theory; his correlation between hermeneutics and the Lacanian subject expands the language of the former, allowing an approach to subjectivity not compromised by the assumptions of post-Cartesian modern metaphysics.

The focus of this collective volume is on the mutual determination of language structure, discourse patterns and the accessibility to consciousness of mental contents of different types of organization and complexity. The contributions address the following problems, among others: the history of the interpretation of ‘conscious’ and ‘unconscious’ mind in the theoretical discourse of modern linguistics; the determination of the structure of consciousness by the grammatical structure; the levels of access of grammatical and lexical information to consciousness; the development of cognitive complexity and control in ontogeny; pathologies of consciousness access in discourse comprehension and production; the cognitive contextual prerequisites for the representation of meaning in consciousness; the relationships between language structure and qualia in the phenomenology of experience; the dialogical structure of intentionality and meaning representation, etc. (Series B)

If you read or reread Freud, it is difficult not to find on a single page references to language: from speech to text, from slip of the tongue to word play, from letter to meaning-passing inevitably through the strange notion of literal meaning, that fascinated Freud. In short, the unconscious is linked to language. How could it be otherwise, if psychoanalysis is a cure through speech as indicated as early as 1881, by Fraülein Anna O.? The problem of the relationship between linguistic and psychoanalytic concepts necessarily arises. Until now this question has been examined mainly by psychoanalysts, from their own perspective, but here it is investigated by a linguist, who systematically explores two domains. The first is related to the sign and symbol, where the meeting of Freud, Saussure and Hjelmselv ocurred; whereas in the second, that of the signifier, Saussure reappears escorted by Lacan. But Freud is not far away, sine the Lacanian theory of the signifier is rooted not only in Saussure's Cours, but also in the Metapsychology and in Freud's Correspondence with Fliess. To aspire to unravel this knot, in fact corresponds to attempt a reading of the Lacanian aphorism “the unconscious is structured like a language”.

The Language Of The Self written by Jacques Lacan and has been published by Johns Hopkins University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-12-17 with Literary Criticism categories.

Jacques Lacan's commentaries on Freud had revolutionary implications not only for the analytic movement but also for contemporary philosophy and literary criticism. Lacan held that if the unconscious, as Freud described it, exists, it functions linguistically, rather than symbolically or instinctually. He refers to the unconscious as a language: "the discourse of the Other." In The Language of the Self Lacan offers a significant and fertile return to the heart of the Freudian texts. Originally published in paperback under the title Speech and Language in Psychoanalysis, this book is based on Anthony Wilden's translation of "Fonction et champ de la parole et du langage en psychanalyse," a 1953 article that became a manifesto for a generation interested in a new reading of Freud. Wilden expands and amplifies the text with extensive notes and a commentary that places Lacan's work in the context of contemporary thought.

Arguing With Lacan written by Joseph H. Smith and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991 with Ego (Psychology) categories.

The writings of Jacques Lacan have been seminal in the ongoing debate on the place of language in the construction of reality and the self. In this book, psychoanalyst Joseph H.Smith summarizes portions of his own and Lacan's readings of Freud on the unconscious and shows that the differences between Lacan's theories and American ego psychology are far less absolute than Lacan would have us believe. Lacan's claim that the unconscious is structured like a language, Smith asserts, is supported both by Freud's writings and by ego psychology. The final chapter, about Eve, draws on Kristeva's multitextual play on Lacanian phallocentrism.
