“Becoming Home: Diaspora and the Anglophone Transnational” is a collection of essays exploring national identity, migration, exile, colonialism, postcolonialism, slavery, race, and gender in the literature of the Anglophone world. The volume focuses on the dispersion or scattering of people in exile, and how those with an existing homeland and those displaced, without a politically recognized sovereign state, negotiate displacement and the experience of living at home-abroad. This group includes expatriate minority communities existing uneasily and nostalgically on the margins of their host country. The diaspora becomes an important cultural phenomenon in the formation of national identities and opposing attempts to transcend the idea of nationhood itself on its way to developing new forms of transnationalism. Chapters on the literature or national allegories of the diaspora and the transnational explore the diverse and geographically expansive ways in which Anglophone literature by colonized subjects and emigrants negotiates diasporic spaces to create imagined communities or a sense of home. Themes explored within these pages include restlessness, tensions, trauma, ambiguities, assimilation, estrangement, myth, nostalgia, sentimentality, homesickness, national schizophrenia, divided loyalties, intellectual capital, and geographical interstices. While the typology, syntax, and morphology of Iranian languages have been widely explored, the sociolinguistic aspects remain largely understudied. This book offers an interdisciplinary approach to the phenomenon of diaspora and transnational communities, political mobilisation, and the political paradigm of deconstruction and reconstruction of the state. Using new or extended concepts such as fluid identity and liquid diaspora, the author provides a qualitative analysis and discourse in a multi-focused study on media representations, including prejudices and stereotypes of migrants, and examines the Romanian community living in Germany. Simultaneously tied to and rejected by two countries, diasporans create new forms of the concept of home as they exhibit a multifaceted attachment to both their home and host countries and integrate to very different degrees. They escape their reality by consuming and creating media in their mother tongue, which they regard as a final refuge. This underlines the love-hate relationship they have with both their homeland and their host country, which is intensified by self-recrimination during their attempts to redefine their identity on their long journey to a place of loss and nostalgia, while striving to be accepted as Europeans and part of a nation but where something is always missing.

Diasporic populations offer unique opportunities for the study of language variation and change. This volume is the first collection of sociolinguistic studies of English use across the historically complex and widely dispersed Indian diaspora. The contributions describe particular sociohistorical contexts (the UK, Fiji, South Africa, Singapore, and the Caribbean) and then use this rich empirical base to examine diverse questions in theory and method, such as the extent to which different settings see different or similar linguistic outcomes; the role of community structures, transnational ties, attitudes, and identity; reasons for differing rates of change, adaptation, and focussing; and the relevance of endonormative stabilization of Asian Englishes. These themes do not simply further our understandings of diaspora. They can ultimately feed into wider theoretical questions in language contact studies, including universals, selection and adaptation of traits, and interactions between social contact, identity, and language change.
