Le Sénégal présente une situation plurilingue complexe et évolutive, où les relations entre langues et identités sont en pleine évolution et témoignent des changements sociaux en cours. Les recherches menées par les auteurs depuis les années 1980, tant à Dakar qu'à Ziguinchor, ont permis de reconsidérer la relation langue/identité de groupe dans des espaces urbains et sociaux en cours de transformation. Les emprunts, mélanges et alternances de codes sont des outils de la variation, et leur usage, plus ou moins conséquent, génère d'autres formes de " langues " au sein de nouveaux groupes. La prééminence du wolof urbain dans les configurations décrites est une constante de l'évolution linguistique citadine. Le contact avec le français y est permanent et s'exerce de façon variable en fonction de l'âge des locuteurs, de leur degré de scolarisation, de leur sexe, de leur appartenance de groupe... Cependant, le plurilinguisme se maintient du fait des relations que les groupes urbanisés entretiennent avec les terroirs d'origine. Il est nettement plus sensible à Ziguinchor qu'à Dakar. L'exemple de ces deux villes sénégalaises illustre bien les évolutions sociolinguistiques actuelles que l'on observe dans les pays du Sud.
