Lanthanide-Based Multifunctional Materials: From OLEDs to SIMs serves as a comprehensive and state-of the art review on these promising compounds, delivering a panorama of their extensive and rapidly growing applications. After an introductory chapter on the theoretical description of the optical and magnetic behaviour of lanthanides and on the prediction of their properties by ab-initio methods, four chapters are devoted to lanthanide-based OLEDs, including the latest trends in visible emitters, the emerging field of near infrared emitters and the first achievements attained in the field of chiral OLEDs. The use of lanthanide complexes as molecular magnets spreads over another two chapters, which explain the evolution of 4f-elements-based SIMs and the most recent advances in heterometallic 3d–4f SMMs. Other very active research areas are covered in the remaining five chapters, dedicated to lanthanide-doped germanate and tellurite glasses, luminescent materials for up-conversion, luminescent thermosensors, multimodal imaging and therapeutic agents, and chemosensors. The book is aimed at academic and industrial researchers, undergraduates and postgraduates alike, and is of particular interest for the Materials Science, Applied Physics and Applied Chemistry communities. - Includes the latest progress on lanthanide-based materials and their applications (in OLEDs, SIMs, doped matrices, up-conversion, thermosensors, theragnostics and chemosensors) - Presents basic and applied aspects of the Physics and Chemistry of lanthanide compounds, as well as future lines of action - Covers successful examples of devices and proofs-of-concept and provides guidelines for the rational design of new materials

The updated and much expanded 3e of the Handbook of Radioactivity Analysis is an authoritative reference providing the principles, practical techniques, and procedures for the accurate measurement of radioactivity from the very low levels encountered in the environment to higher levels measured in radioisotope research, clinical laboratories, biological sciences, radionuclide standardization, nuclear medicine, nuclear power, and fuel cycle facilities and in the implementation of nuclear forensic analysis and nuclear safeguards. The book describes the basic principles of radiation detection and measurement and the preparation of samples from a wide variety of matrices, assists the investigator or technician in the selection and use of appropriate radiation detectors, and presents state-of-the-art methods of analysis. Fundamentals of radiation properties, radionuclide decay, the calculations involved, and methods of detection provide the basis for a thorough understanding of the analytical procedures. The Handbook of Radioactivity Analysis, 3e, is suitable as a teaching text for university and professional training courses. - The only comprehensive reference that describes the principles of detection and practical applications of every type of radioactivity detector currently used. The new 3e is broader in scope, with revised and expanded chapters, new authors, and seven new chapters on Alpha Spectrometry, Radionuclide Standardization, Radioactive Aerosol Measurements, Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring, Marine Radioactivity Analysis, Nuclear Forensic Analysis and Analytical Techniques in Nuclear Safeguards - Discusses in detail the principles, theory and practice applied to all types of radiation detection and measurement, making it useful for both teaching and research

Handbook On The Physics And Chemistry Of Rare Earths written by Karl A. Gschneidner (Jr.) and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-07-11 with Science categories.

Even at the beginning of the new millenium the rare earths still remain, to a certain extent, a mystery. The chapters in this volume will help to unravel some of these. In the filling of the 4f electronic orbitals the lanthanides defy the elementary aufbau principle that underlies the periodic sequence of the elements, and the authors of the first chapter introduce the readers to the basic physics of the orbital collapse leading to that failure. Furthermore an explanation is offered in terms of double-well potentials. The phenomenon is illustrated using the valence transitions observed in some of the rare earth atoms, including Sm group metals and the higher oxides of cerium, praseodymium and terbium. In the second chapter the synthesis and structure of the many types of rare earth halides are described. They have been described as simple, complex, binary, ternary and multinuclear complex, and other categories needed to deal with the most studied of the rare earth compounds. The structure types are skillfully illustrated to show the elementary architecture of each type. In chapter three the authors discuss the science and applications of rare earth super ionic conductors as solid electrolytes. Conduction by oxygen and fluorine anions as well as hydrogen and other cations associated with these electrolytes is emphasized. They deal with extrinsic and intrinsic types together with their associated structures and structural types including structural defects. The chapter concludes with an outline of the many applications of solid electrolytes. Chapter four introduces the reader to the principles that underlie thermoluminescence and its application to dosimetry and provides detailed information on the R-activated phosphors that support dosimetry. This is a selective review of detailed literature based on the areas making most progress. The final chapter elaborates on the data gained by the studies and interpretation around the analytical separation of the individual rare earth elements utilizing chromatographic techniques. The authors describe the fundamental chemistry that underpins contemporary analytical separation techniques for lanthanide separation and analysis. This is done after a description of the rich assortment of separation methods in use has been introduced.

The Chemistry Of The Actinides written by S. Ahrland and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-07 with Science categories.

The Chemistry of the Actinides contains selected chapters from the Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry to meet the needs of certain specialists in this field. The book describes the 14 elements after actinium in the Periodic Table, known as the actinide elements or the 5f transition series. The book notes the occurrence, separation, chemical properties, chemical structures, and preparation of the metals. In a discussion of analytical chemistry, the radioactive properties of the actinides and the lanthanides are compared. The text then describes the nuclear or radiochemical records and chemical properties of the different members of the actinide series such as thorium, uranium, plutonium, and einsteinium. The book also explains the differences between the 5f shell and the 4f shell. One paper then discusses the groups of alloy compounds, including rare earths and intra-actinides. Another paper examines the general properties of actinide ions as to their electronic structure and oxidation states; the stability and preparation of the different oxidation states; and the applicability of solvent extraction in separating and purifying various substances. The text is suitable for researchers in organic chemistry, nuclear and atomic physicists, scientists, and academicians whose work involves radioactive materials.

Elements And Their Compounds In The Environment written by Ernest Merian and has been published by Wiley-VCH this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Science categories.

Since the last edition was published in 1991, the "Merian" has established itself as the standard reference on this topic, and remains unmatched in the breadth of material covered. This new edition has 20 % more pages while being more clearly and concisely structured. New topical features are the focus on nutritional aspects and the coverage of further elements, including non-metals. The newly added chapters cover more than 15 essential elements, as well as some of environmental and nutritional importance. While many chapters of the previous edition have been practically rewritten to accommodate the rapid progress made in this field, all the contributions have been revised and updated to present the current state of knowledge. As such, the handbook continues to provide detailed information on the environmental metals that influence the health of plants, animals and humans, with particular attention given to environmental and analytical chemistry, bioavailability, metabolic pathways and biological effects. It also delineates the problems related to waste, soils and wildlife as well as the risks caused by the increasing output of metals from industry and households. It retains the proven features of the first edition, such as the extensive bibliography, numerous tables with useful data and a glossary of terms, and once again all the contributions were not only written but also reviewed by acknowledged and experienced experts. In total, international experts from 15 countries have pooled their knowledge and experience to create this ultimate resource. Essential information for chemists, biologists, geologists, food scientists, toxicologists and physiologists involved in environmental research and remediation, risk assessment, food research and industrial hygiene.
