This book has been primarily written for the student of mathematics who is in the second year or the early part of the third year of an undergraduate course. It will also be very useful for students of engineering and the physical sciences for whom Laplace Transforms continue to be an extremely useful tool. The book demands no more than an elementary knowledge of calculus and linear algebra of the type found in many first year mathematics modules for applied subjects. For mathematics majors and specialists, it is not the mathematics that will be challenging but the applications to the real world. The author is in the privileged position of having spent ten or so years outside mathematics in an engineering environment where the Laplace Transform is used in anger to solve real problems, as well as spending rather more years within mathematics where accuracy and logic are of primary importance. This book is written unashamedly from the point of view of the applied mathematician. The Laplace Transform has a rather strange place in mathematics. There is no doubt that it is a topic worthy of study by applied mathematicians who have one eye on the wealth of applications; indeed it is often called Operational Calculus.

This volume is an introductory level textbook for partial differential equations (PDE's) and suitable for a one-semester undergraduate level or two-semester graduate level course in PDE's or applied mathematics. Chapters One to Five are organized according to the equations and the basic PDE's are introduced in an easy to understand manner. They include the first-order equations and the three fundamental second-order equations, i.e. the heat, wave and Laplace equations. Through these equations we learn the types of problems, how we pose the problems, and the methods of solutions such as the separation of variables and the method of characteristics. The modeling aspects are explained as well. The methods introduced in earlier chapters are developed further in Chapters Six to Twelve. They include the Fourier series, the Fourier and the Laplace transforms, and the Green's functions. The equations in higher dimensions are also discussed in detail. This volume is application-oriented and rich in examples. Going through these examples, the reader is able to easily grasp the basics of PDE's.

Transform Methods For Solving Partial Differential Equations written by Dean G. Duffy and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-02-16 with Mathematics categories.
For most scientists and engineers, the only analytic technique for solving linear partial differential equations is separation of variables. In Transform Methods for Solving Partial Differential Equations, the author uses the power of complex variables to demonstrate how Laplace and Fourier transforms can be harnessed to solve many practical, everyday problems experienced by scientists and engineers. Unlike many mathematics texts, this book provides a step-by-step analysis of problems taken from scientific and engineering literature. Detailed solutions are given in the back of the book. This essential text/reference draws from the latest literature on transform methods to provide in-depth discussions on the joint transform problem, the Cagniard-de Hoop method, and the Wiener-Hopf technique. Some 1,500 references are included as well.

Linear evolution equations in Banach spaces have seen important developments in the last two decades. This is due to the many different applications in the theory of partial differential equations, probability theory, mathematical physics, and other areas, and also to the development of new techniques. One important technique is given by the Laplace transform. It played an important role in the early development of semigroup theory, as can be seen in the pioneering monograph by Rille and Phillips [HP57]. But many new results and concepts have come from Laplace transform techniques in the last 15 years. In contrast to the classical theory, one particular feature of this method is that functions with values in a Banach space have to be considered. The aim of this book is to present the theory of linear evolution equations in a systematic way by using the methods of vector-valued Laplace transforms. It is simple to describe the basic idea relating these two subjects. Let A be a closed linear operator on a Banach space X. The Cauchy problern defined by A is the initial value problern (t 2 0), (CP) {u'(t) = Au(t) u(O) = x, where x E X is a given initial value. If u is an exponentially bounded, continuous function, then we may consider the Laplace transform 00 u(>. ) = 1 e-). . tu(t) dt of u for large real>. .

The classical theory of the Laplace Transform can open many new avenues when viewed from a modern, semi-classical point of view. In this book, the author re-examines the Laplace Transform and presents a study of many of the applications to differential equations, differential-difference equations and the renewal equation.

The book is designed for undergraduate or beginning level graduate students, and students from interdisciplinary areas including engineers, and others who need to use partial differential equations, Fourier series, Fourier and Laplace transforms. The prerequisite is a basic knowledge of calculus, linear algebra, and ordinary differential equations. The textbook aims to be practical, elementary, and reasonably rigorous; the book is concise in that it describes fundamental solution techniques for first order, second order, linear partial differential equations for general solutions, fundamental solutions, solution to Cauchy (initial value) problems, and boundary value problems for different PDEs in one and two dimensions, and different coordinates systems. Analytic solutions to boundary value problems are based on Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems and series solutions. The book is accompanied with enough well tested Maple files and some Matlab codes that are available online. The use of Maple makes the complicated series solution simple, interactive, and visible. These features distinguish the book from other textbooks available in the related area.
