Amanat ini memang tidak ringan. Ia sangat menuntut kecermatan dan keakuratan, bukan hanya dalam standar kualitas akurasi leksikal, melainkan juga standar akurasi historis yang cukup kompleks, mulai dari akurasi kronologis peristiwa, hingga akurasi dalam aspek teknik, taktik, dan strategi militer, termasuk penggunaan istilah-istilah terminologi militer yang berlaku kala kurun waktu pasca-Perang Dunia II, yakni dari tahun 1945-1947. Terlebih, sebagai sebuah Republik yang sejarah militernya sangat dipengaruhi oleh beragam sumber tradisi, doktrin, dan gaya organisasi militer asing, khususnya Belanda dan Jepang, maka segala bentuk narasi sejarah militer Indonesia, termasuk TRIP sebagai bagian dari embrio Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI), pada hakikatnya menuntut pemahaman lintas tradisi dan doktrin dari kedua sumber pengaruh tersebut yang hingga kini masih terasa jejaknya. Oleh karena itu, kepekaan intuitif yang tinggi dalam pengalihbahasaan istilah-istilah militer dari naskah berbahasa Inggris ke dalam istilah Belanda seperti stelling (lokasi kedudukan pasukan), mitrallieur watermantel (yang dalam bahasa militer Inggris disebut water-cooled machine gun), pistolen-mitrallieur (yang dalam bahasa militer Inggris dikenal dengan sub-machine gun), atau koppel rijm dan drag rijm (yang dalam bahasa Inggris disebut webbing dan web belt) adalah suatu keniscayaan yang tak terhindarkan, karena demikianlah istilah yang digunakan kala itu, termasuk oleh pasukan Indonesia. Bahkan, kosakata ini terbawa hingga ke era Kemerdekaan dan era Pembangunan hingga kini, dibawa oleh kalangan Angkatan ‘45 yang memang Netherlandsche spreken. Kepekaan yang sama juga diperlukan untuk menerjemahkan narasi berbahasa Inggris dari terminologi militer dan nomenklatur persenjataan Jepang, seperti penyebutan “Nambu-machine gun” dan “Japanese 50mm light mortar” dalam perbendaharaan kosakata bahasa Inggris dalam sejarah militer Sekutu tentang Jepang, lebih akan dipahami oleh para pejuang Indonesia dengan nama aslinya yang mereka peroleh dari para instruktur Jepang semasa pendidikan PETA/Gyugun dan Tokubetsu Keisatsutai (Polisi Istimewa), yakni “juki- kanju” dan “tekidanto”! Demikian pula, sebagai negara berdaulat yang kemudian mengembangkan tradisi, doktrin, dan wawasan strategisnya sendiri, Republik Indonesia modern pun memiliki bahasa militer Indonesia yang tak kalah established dan melembaga. Tak pelak, akronim “AA” (Anti Aircraft) dalam naskah asli yang berbahasa Inggris, harus diterjemahkan ke dalam akronim spesifik yang berlaku secara resmi di lingkungan TNI, yakni PSU (Penangkis Serangan Udara). Demikian pula penyebutan ukuran kaliber senjata, menyesuaikan dengan sistem di Indonesia yang lebih menganut sistem metrik, maka penyebutan kaliber 1.6 inci untuk kanon PSU Bofors L-70 dalam naskah asli, dialih-kaliberkan menjadi 40 mm dalam naskah bahasa Indonesia. Hal yang sama berlaku untuk penyebutan kaliber Senjata Mesin Berat (SMB) Browning 50 (Browning punt vijftig dalam bahasa Belanda, dan diserap ke dalam lingo TNI menjadi “pen lima puluh”) tentunya dialih- kaliberkan menjadi 12,7 mm. Singkatnya, amanat ini bukan sekadar “alih bahasa” biasa, tetapi juga “alih-konsep” dari bahasa (Militer) Inggris ke dalam bahasa (Militer) Indonesia, yang sangat dipengaruhi oleh rekam jejak pengaruh tradisi dan doktrin militer Belanda dan Jepang. Suatu tantangan sekaligus anugerah, yang bagi Penerbit, bukan hanya memperkaya khasanah pemahaman kita semua tentang sejarah perjuangan Bangsa Indonesia, melainkan sekaligus juga memperkaya pemahaman kita tentang berbagai hal yang melatari proses dan dinamika perjuangan tersebut. Untuk memenuhi standar yang diamanatkan dari karya H. R.S. Koesoemo dimaksud, Penerbit menyampaikan apresiasi atas kerja keras dari Tim Penerjemah, khususnya Sdr. Akhir kata, bertolak dari perenungan makna akar kata “sejarah” yang sejatinya merupakan kosakata serapan dari bahasa Arab yakni syajaratun (pohon), kiranya tumbuh suburnya pohon karakter bangsa Indonesia, tempat para anak bangsa bersatu dan bernaung dalam keteduhan rindang naungannya, memerlukan air dan pupuk yang cukup untuk terus lestari.
