Dua yang pertama merupakan roman, sementara dua lainnya karya non-?ksi. Tema yang diangkat dalam empat karya tersebut merupakan potret sosial zamannya, dan masih relevan hingga hari ini. Kisah percintaan dalam Capgome melibatkan penentangan sengit antara golongan kolot dan golongan yang mendambakan perubahan. Zonder Lentera bercerita tentang tingkah-polah pejabat (wijkmeester) yang lalim dan tamak. Kedua tema tersebut kini masih sering kita jumpai tidak hanya dalam novel maupun sinetron, tapi juga kehidupan sehari-hari. Demikian pula dengan dua karya berikutnya. Membaca Berkahnya Malaise, yang berisikan kumpulan kisah keseharian masyarakat pada “Zaman Meleset”, kita seperti diajak bercermin dengan situasi hari ini. Sama seperti krisis ekonomi akhir 1990-an, malaise pada 1930-an menyebabkan bank-bank tutup, utang menumpuk, perusahaan gulung tikar, karyawan di-PHK, rakyat kelaparan, dan kriminalitas meningkat. Meski begitu sebagian besar masyarakat ternyata tidak menyerah. Mereka menganggap krisis malah membawa berkah (baca: peluang). Atsal Mulahnya Timbul Pergerakan Tionghoa tidak hanya menguraikan secara lengkap sejarah pembentukan dan perkembangan Tiong Hoa Hwe Koan (THHK), tapi juga mencatat berbagai penyebab pokok bangkitnya golongan Tionghoa pada akhir abad ke-19. Membaca buku ini, barangkali kita dapat menilai dan menanggapi secara lebih memadai bangkitnya berbagai partai politik dan kelompok sosial di kalangan etnis Tionghoa pada masa reformasi.
