Excerpt from Las Fuentes Narrativas de la Historia de España Durante la Edad Media, 417-1474 Semejantes estudios, tan vastos como difíciles, por exigir de sus cultivadores una preparación previa poco frecuente en España y que, por triste que sea decirlo, en manera alguna se conquista con sólo el título académico, son indispensables para que algún dia pueda escribirse la historio grafía general española; porq ¿cómo ha de ser posible estudiar las obras de nuestros cronistas, si de la mayor parte de ellos carecemos de textos críticos y definitivos? Del mismo modo que los historiadores de nuestra literatura para darnos a conocer la evolución de las ideas estéticas del pueblo español han debido comenzar por la depu ración y critica de los textos literarios, dándonos estos en la misma forma y lenguaje en que fueron escritos, libres de arreglos, adaptaciones é interpola ciones con que la ignorancia, la mala fe 6 la falta de sentido crítico los había desnaturalizado, así también conviene sujetar á análoga depuración los textos historiales, sin cuyo requisito es imposible conocer la evolución historiográfica del pueblo español. Labor es ésta que exige muchisimo tiem po V no menor esfuerzo y, si bien algo se ha he cho en tal sentido, hay que reconocer que una gran parte de los escritos de nuestros cronistas é historiógrafos es desconocida por estar inédita, ó mal conocida porque no disponemos sino de textos incompletos, mutilados ó alterados, que se publicaron'en época ya lejana y que las exigenciasde la crítica obligan a una total y definitiva re visión. Lo que llevamos indicado se refiere única mente a los tiempos medios. Prescindimos de la edad antigua, porque los historiadores y geógrafos griegos y romanos que escribieron de nuestra peninsula están publicados y han sido, además, estudiados debidamente en infinidad de obras y monografías, en su mayor parte extranjeras, es cierto, pero asequibles a cualquiera que esté enterado del progreso de los estudios históricos en Europa, para lo cual no escasean ciertamente los libros de divulgación. Bástenos citar a este pro pósito el Manuel de Philologie classique de Salomón Reinach, (1) Minerva: Introduction a l' étude des classi ques scolaires grecs el la!ins del Dr. Gow (2) y el citado libro de E. Hubner, en cuyas obras encon trará el lector excelente orientación bibliográfica para las fuentes de la historia antigua. Limitado nuestro trabajo a la Edad Media, (3) aun en ésta nos concretaremos a resumir lo relativo a la mo narquía visigoda y a la historiografía arábigo hispana, ya que las fuentes de estos periodos han sido expuestas en los libros, arriba indicados, de los Sres.
