La jarcha es una breve estrofa, típicamente la de una canción cantada por una mujer, citada como parte final de un poema en árabe o hebreo llamado moaxaja. El género tiene su origen en al-Ándalus, en la Iberia medieval. Desde los primeros estudios modernos de las jarchas con texto romance, por los lingüistas Stern y García Gómez, ha pasado más de medio siglo. Este libro supone una actualización del estudio de las jarchas romances, teniendo en cuenta los más recientes avances en teorías como las de la sociología de la lengua en el ámbito lingüístico, la crítica feminista en el ámbito literario, así como el materialismo cultural en el ámbito sociocultural. El arte, incluidas la música y la literatura del pasado, es, entre otras cosas, un reflejo de factores socioculturales existentes en la sociedad y la época de su creación. Los estudios de los textos literarios desde una perspectiva sociocultural forman parte, por tanto de una continua revisión de nuestra imagen de la sociedad y su historia. Las voces, en un sentido lingüístico, que encontramos en las jarchas romances, son un legado del romance andalusí, que sobrevive en el andaluz actual. Además, las voces de nuestras jarchas, en un sentido literario, participan en una polifonía literaria entre la voz de la moaxaja y la voz de su jarcha. Finalmente, las voces de estas jarchas, en un sentido sociocultural, pertenecen a mujeres que se desenvuelven en el arte y la sociedad medieval de una manera que aún hoy en día es capaz de sorprender y encantar.

La huella de Al-Ándalus es mucho más profunda y extensa de lo que pudiera parecer con un análisis superficial del tema. La huella más visible es la del patrimonio en forma de palacios, mezquitas convertidas en iglesias, alcazabas, torres, murallas, etc. Para la existencia de este tipo de huella no es necesario que haya habido una continuidad poblacional, como tampoco es necesaria esa pervivencia para otro de los legados, el científico, que como conocimiento pasa a formar parte del patrimonio de otras culturas. Pero hay otro tipo de huellas que han pervivido hasta ahora que sí que necesitan para su transmisión a lo largo del tiempo de una pervivencia poblacional, muy difícil pervivencia en muchos casos, sin la cual no se entendería ese legado. Una parte de esa población se adaptó rápido, religiosa y socialmente, a la nueva sociedad conquistadora del siglo XIII, de la que por cierto, no divergía tanto como pudiera pensarse. Otra parte de la población andalusí, la que decidió seguir conservando su religión musulmana o judía dentro del territorio ya conquistado, tuvo una adaptación mucho más traumática a raíz de la intransigencia de poderosos sectores de la iglesia católica. De una forma u otra, una parte importante de la población andalusí siguió habitando el territorio peninsular y, con mayor o menor grado de asimilación a la sociedad cristiana, intervino en la conformación de esa nueva sociedad. Así pues, debemos tener en cuenta esta premisa para poder entender la gran importancia del legado de al-Ándalus, no sólo en relación al patrimonio sino también a la idiosincrasia del pueblo andaluz que tiene mucho que ver con la del pueblo andalusí. El amor por la poesía, la música, la fiesta; su interrelación con la naturaleza; la conformación del paisaje agrario; la arquitectura popular; la forma de comer, de rezar, de ver la muerte y la vida, de hablar, de nombrar a los lugares y a sí mismos; en definitiva, la cultura, pues todo ello junto es lo que antropológicamente se conoce como cultura, no se entendería actualmente sin la existencia de la cultura andalusí, de la que es heredera, y que a su vez es heredera, en gran parte, de la cultura grecorromana anterior.

Die Eckdaten 711 und 1492 umrahmen machtpolitisch gesehen die Zeit maurischer Präsenz auf der Iberischen Halbinsel auf einem Territorium wechselnder Ausdehnung, das unter dem Namen al-Andalus bekannt ist. Der letztlich über mehr als acht Jahrhunderte währende Kontakt zwischen Orient und Okzident hatte für Spanien kulturelle und insbesondere auch sprachliche Auswirkungen, die bis in die Gegenwart reichen. So hat das Arabische nach dem lateinischen Fundus den größten Anteil am spanischen Wortschatz. Die Beschreibung des als arabisches Kulturadstrat charakterisierten Einflusses auf verschiedenen sprachlichen Ebenen ist Gegenstand des vorliegenden Arbeitsheftes. Das Arbeitsheft bietet vor dem Hintergrund des RA 41 von Gustav Ineichen (1997, Arabisch-orientalische Sprachkontakte in der Romania) einen Ausbau und die Vertiefung der Thematik für den spanischen Sprachbereich, der in der universitären Lehre mehr im Mittelpunkt steht. Damit schließt die Publikation eine Lücke im Bereich verfügbarer Materialien für den Unterricht, denn als Hinführung an die Gesamtthematik steht neben Abschnitten in den einschlägigen Sprachgeschichten auch heute lediglich der zentrale Aufsatz von Reinhold Kontzi (1982, "Das Zusammentreffen der arabischen Welt mit der romanischen und seine sprachlichen Folgen") zur Verfügung. Ein dem allgemeinen Verständnis förderlicher Aspekt liegt in dem Ansatz, die arabischen Einflüsse nicht allein im Hinblick auf das Spanische zu beschreiben, sondern auch bezüglich zugrunde liegender Strukturen zu beleuchten.

Translating the Hebrew Bible in Medieval Iberia provides the princeps diplomatic edition and a comprehensive study of Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Hunt. 268. The study takes the received view among scholars that women in the Middle Ages were faced with sustained misogyny and that their voices were seldom heard in public and subjects it to a critical analysis. The ten chapters deal with various aspects of the question, and the voices of a variety of authors - both female and male - are heard. The study opens with an enquiry into violence against women, including in texts by male writers (Hartmann von Aue, Gottfried von Straßburg, Wolfram von Eschenbach) which indeed describe instances of violence, but adopt an extremely critical stance towards them. It then proceeds to show how women were able to develop an independent identity in various genres and could present themselves as authorities in the public eye. Mystic texts by Hildegard of Bingen, Marie de France and Margery Kempe, the medieval conduct poem known as Die Winsbeckin, the Devout Books of Sisters composed in convents in South-West Germany, but also quasi-historical documents such as the memoirs of Helene Kottaner or Anna Weckerin's cookery book, demonstrate that far more women were in the public gaze than had hitherto been assumed and that they possessed the self-confidence to establish their positions with their intellectual and their literary achievements.

The number of surviving medieval secular poems attributed to named female authors is small, some of the best known being those of the trobairitz the female troubadours of southern France. However, there is a large body of poetry that constructs a particular textual femininity through the use of the female voice. Some of these poems are by men and a few by women (including the trobairitz); many are anonymous, and often the gender of the poet is unresolvable. A "woman's song" in this sense can be defined as a female-voice poem on the subject of love, typically characterized by simple language, sexual candor, and apparent artlessness. The chapters in Medieval Woman's Song bring together scholars in a range of disciplines to examine how both men and women contributed to this art form. Without eschewing consideration of authorship, the collection deliberately overturns the long-standing scholarly practice of treating as separate and distinct entities female-voice lyrics composed by men and those composed by women. What is at stake here is less the voice of women themselves than its cultural and generic construction.

Late Latin and Early Romance presents a theory of the relationship between Latin and Romance during the period 400-1250. The central hypothesis is that what we now call 'Medieval Latin' was invented around 800 AD when Carolingian scholars standardised the pronunciation of liturgical texts, and that otherwise what was spoken was simply the local variety of Old French, Old Spanish, etc. Thus, the view generally held before the publication of this work, that 'Latin' and 'Romance' existed alongside each other in earlier centuries, is anachronistic. Before 800, Late Latin was Early Romance. This hypothesis is examined first from the viewpoint of historical linguistics, with particular attention paid to the idea of lexical diffusion (ch. 1), and then (ch. 2) through detailed study of pre-Carolingian texts. Chapter 3 deals with the impact in France of the introduction of standardised Latin by Carolingian scholars, and shows how the earliest texts written in the vernacular resulted from it. The final two chapters turn to the situation in Spain from the eighth to the thirteenth centuries. Ch. 4 suggests, on the evidence of a large variety of texts, that before 1080 the new Latin pronunciation (i.e. Medieval Latin) was not used; Ch. 5 charts the slow spread, as a result of Europeanising reforms, of a distinction between Latin and vernacular Romance between 1080 and 1250. There is an extensive bibliography and full indexes. Wright's controversial book presents a wide range of detailed evidence, with extensive quotation of relevant texts and documents. When it was published in 1982 it challenged established ideas in the fields of Romance linguistics and Medieval Latin. The collectively established facts are however explained better by his theory that Medieval Latin was a revolutionary innovation consequent upon liturgical reform, than by the view that it was a miraculous conservative survival that lasted unchanged for a millennium. Late Latin and Early Romance draws on philological, historical and literary evidence from the medieval period, and on historical linguistics, and is a seminal work in these areas of scholarship.

Love Songs from al-Andalus presents an updated survey of the debates concerning Andalusian strophic poetry and their Kharjas. Attention is focused on the texts themselves and their literary implications as testimonies of the multicultural and multilingual society of al-Andalus. Since languages and alphabets of the three major religions have been used, these texts are studies historically, prosodically, thematically and stylistically and are related to the three literary traditions. One of the novelties of this study is the fact that it has been based upon the most updated edition and interpretations of the texts introducing emendations in over a third of its contents and making obsolete most of the hundreds of previous articles and books on the topic. Another novelty is the fact that stylistic features have been studied according to the Arabic model, casting new light on them. The survey of thematic relationships and the analysis of code-switching phenomena add weight to the conclusions of this research.
