Dos siglas condensan todo el horror vivido bajo el régimen dictatorial: la DINA y la CNI. Indagar sus orígenes, conocer sus métodos y estructuras, a sus miembros, establecer las circunstancias de las capturas y asesinatos de muchos de nuestros compatriotas, ha sido la motivación del periodista Manuel Salazar para emprender una acuciosa investigación que culmina en Las letras del horror, obra que presentamos en dos volúmenes. Esta primera entrega, centrada en la Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional, pone de relieve algunas preguntas inquietantes: ¿Por qué los integrantes de la DINA se ensañaron con sus detenidos? ¿Dónde y de quiénes aprendieron las brutales técnicas de tortura que aplicaron con ellos? ¿Cuáles fueron los motivos para asesinar y hacer desaparecer? ¿Cómo operaron las redes secretas que el otrora poderoso coronel Manuel Contreras tejió en América y Europa? Para intentar dilucidar estas y otras muchas interrogantes, el autor recoge los antecedentes acerca de la influencia que diversos grupos de la ultraderecha chilena ejercían en la oficialidad militar ya en los años 60. Señala, además, al Club de la Unión, las sedes partidarias y los círculos frecuentados por dirigentes políticos y empresariales de la derecha como lugares de los que luego saldrían colaboradores civiles de la DINA dispuestos a “dar caza” a sus adversarios políticos. Las letras del horror relata las primeras intervenciones de los aparatos de seguridad en el campo de prisioneros de Tejas Verdes y la aparición de los cuarteles secretos, donde a los detenidos se les sometía a torturas indecibles que frecuentemente terminaban con su muerte y eliminación de los cuerpos; recupera los nombres, las “chapas” y los apodos de las víctimas y de sus victimarios, partícipes estos últimos de las brigadas de detención y exterminio; recoge, del mismo modo, las confesiones y los testimonios que algunos de los agentes y colaboradores de la violencia institucionalizada entregaron años después ante los tribunales de justicia, además de sus nexos con el anticastrismo y el neofascismo italiano. En resumen, un libro que ausculta en detalle –como un nuevo aporte a nuestra memoria histórica, que no nos permita olvidar nunca la trágica experiencia del terror estatal– al principal organismo represivo de aquellos años de zozobra y espanto.

If God can be used by the powerful to justify violence in the name of order, he can also be used by the weak to illuminate the position of the victims of political conflict. Religion, Torture and the Liberation of God explores the theological possibilities of a God who is a prisoner and a victim of torture. The book relocates God to the horrors of the military abuse of human rights in Chile and the systematic rape of women in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Aguilar argues that this theological exercise offers us new ways of understanding the abuse of power, whether it be the clerical abuse of children, violence against women, or homophobia. This examination of torture and rape becomes, through a theology of praxis and compliance, an examination of solidarity, love and affection. The book concludes with an exploration of the possibilities of a tortured God who liberates.

An Open Access edition of this book is available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library as part of the Opening the Future project with COPIM. Representations of China in Latin American Literature (1987-2016) analyses contemporary Latin American novels in which China is the main theme. Using ‘China’ as a multidimensional term, it explores how the novels both highlight and undermine assumptions about China that have shaped Latin America’s understanding of ‘China’ and shows ‘China’ to be a kind of literary/imaginary ‘third’ term which reframes Latin American discourses of alterity. On one level, it argues that these texts play with the way that ‘China’ stands in as a wandering signifier and as a metonym for Asia, a gesture that essentialises it as an unchanging other. On another level, it argues that the novels’ employment of ‘China’ resists essentialist constructions of identity. ‘China’ is thus shown to be serving as a concept which allows for criticism of the construction of fetishized otherness and of the exclusion inherent in essentialist discourses of identity. The book presents and analyses the depiction of an imaginary of China which is arguably performative, but which discloses the tropes and themes which may be both established and subverted, in the novels. Chapter One examines the way in which ‘China’ is represented and constructed in Latin American novels where this country is a setting for their stories. The novels studied in Chapter Two are linked to the presence of Chinese communities in Latin America. The final chapter examines novels whose main theme is travel to contemporary China. Ultimately, in the novels studied in this book ‘China’ serves as a concept through which essentialist notions of identity are critiqued.

El presente volumen nos permite reflexionar sobre la memoria en América Latina y los hechos ocurridos en nuestra historia reciente. Para ello, el libro instala una serie de interrogantes. With the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, during an economic crisis termed its “special period in times of peace,” Cuba began to court the capitalist world for the first time since its 1959 revolution. With the U.S. dollar instated as domestic currency, the island seemed suddenly accessible to foreign consumers, and their interest in its culture boomed. Cuban Currency is the first book to address the effects on Cuban literature of the country’s spectacular opening to foreign markets that marked the end of the twentieth century. Based on interviews and archival research in Havana, Esther Whitfield argues that writers have both challenged and profited from new transnational markets for their work, with far-reaching literary and ideological implications. Whitfield examines money and cross-cultural economic relations as they are inscribed in Cuban fiction. Exploring the work of Zo Valds, Pedro Juan Gutirrez, Antonio Jos Ponte and others, she draws out writers’ engagements with the troublesome commodification of Cuban identity. Confronting the tourist and publishing industries’ roles in the transformation of the Cuban revolution into commercial capital, Whitfield identifies a body of fiction peculiarly attuned to the material and political challenges of the “special period.” Esther Whitfield is assistant professor of comparative literature at Brown University.
