This interdisciplinary edited collection establishes a new dialogue between translation, conflict and memory studies focusing on fictional texts, reports from war zones and audiovisual representations of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco Dictatorship. It explores the significant role of translation in transmitting a recent past that continues to resonate within current debates on how to memorialize this inconclusive historical episode. The volume combines a detailed analysis of well-known authors such as Langston Hughes and John Dos Passos, with an investigation into the challenges found in translating novels such as The Group by Mary McCarthy (considered a threat to the policies established by the dictatorial regime), and includes more recent works such as El tiempo entre costuras by María Dueñas. Esta tesis analiza la imagen de la inmigración en la ficción televisiva de prime time, analizando para ello casi 3.000 personajes de ficción, siendo la mayor muestra, hasta la fecha, que se ha empleado en España para un estudio sobre inmigración. Se pretende comprobar si la aparición del fenómeno inmigratorio se caracteriza, como concluyeron el resto de investigaciones realizadas, por la distorsión, la mirada prejuiciosa, la infrarrepresentación y la asociación, en general, con valores negativos. Gracias a los cuatro estudios realizados (tres de corte cuantitativo y uno de corte cualitativo), la tesis intenta cubrir varios aspectos relacionados con la representación de los inmigrantes en la ficción audiovisual. Así, se analiza la imagen que se ofrece de los inmigrantes, el tipo de interacciones que este tipo de personajes establece con los nacionales y el modo de creación de personajes, tanto a nivel teórico como práctico.

Taking as a starting point an interpretation of the television medium as an Ideological State Apparatus, this book examines how gender roles and non-heteronormative sexualities are constructed in Spanish and Catalan television series. In the first part, which focuses on the construction of gender roles in Catalan soap operas, it applies the analytical paradigms founded by Anglo-Saxon feminist scholars for the content of soap operas to a corpus of material which has rarely been analysed through this perspective. In the second part, which focuses on the construction of non-heteronormative sexualities in Spanish and Catalan television series, the book challenges the rhetoric of “normalisation” and the “essentialist” paradigms which have so far dominated the examination of the construction of sexuality in television series. As such, this book addresses the role performed by television in the construction of meanings which surround gender issues and non-heteronormative sexualities. This is a timely exercise because gender studies and studies of sexual dissidence are fairly recent fields in Spanish and Catalan academia and television has been largely disregarded, especially as far as the analysis of characters and storylines is concerned. As a result, this book represents a major contribution to these fields in the Spanish and Catalan contexts.
