El presente libro está dedicado a un grupo de mujeres que, como Mayer, generaron registros visuales y materiales de cuerpos femeninos, dándose a la tarea de crear y conservar representaciones visuales e información estadística sobre cómo se producen cuerpos marcados por el género, la clase, la raza y la sexualidad en el entorno del paisaje urbano. Premiado en 2020 como el mejor libro de Historia de la Asociación Canadiense de Estudios Latinoamericanos y del Caribe (ACELC). En el México de los años 1970, con la participación cada vez mayor de la mujer en el ámbito público y cuando el predominio de la cultura escrita cedía el paso a la comunicación audiovisual, un grupo de artistas y activistas feministas comenzó a cuestionar cómo el cuerpo femenino era visualmente construido y politizado en los medios de comunicación. Desde un marco transnacional e interdisciplinario, Gabriela Aceves Sepúlveda analiza la casi siempre ignorada influencia de las artistas y activistas feministas en la forma de representar, conceptualizar y politizar el cuerpo femenino, como reflejo del entorno tanto de la Ciudad de México como del escenario mundial de la época. A partir del concepto de "letradas visuales" que acuña la autora, se destaca la creciente participación de la mujer en esferas de influencia intelectual hasta entonces consideradas exclusivamente masculinas. La autora traza cómo el trabajo de las artistas y activistas y sus intervenciones performativas y visuales en el espacio de la ciudad feminizaron sus paisajes mediáticos, las esferas intelectuales y definieron los debates que habrían de darse en torno al cuerpo femenino, el género y la violencia sexual en las últimas décadas del siglo xx. This work resituates the Spanish Caribbean as an extension of the Luso-African Atlantic world from the late sixteenth to the mid-seventeenth century, when the union of the Spanish and Portuguese crowns facilitated a surge in the transatlantic slave trade. After the catastrophic decline of Amerindian populations on the islands, two major African provenance zones, first Upper Guinea and then Angola, contributed forced migrant populations with distinct experiences to the Caribbean. They played a dynamic role in the social formation of early Spanish colonial society in the fortified port cities of Cartagena de Indias, Havana, Santo Domingo, and Panama City and their semirural hinterlands. David Wheat is the first scholar to establish this early phase of the "Africanization" of the Spanish Caribbean two centuries before the rise of large-scale sugar plantations. With African migrants and their descendants comprising demographic majorities in core areas of Spanish settlement, Luso-Africans, Afro-Iberians, Latinized Africans, and free people of color acted more as colonists or settlers than as plantation slaves. These ethnically mixed and economically diversified societies constituted a region of overlapping Iberian and African worlds, while they made possible Spain's colonization of the Caribbean.

Writings on Psychoanalysis gathers, for the first time, Althusser's major essays on psychoanalytic thought. The volume begins with Freud and Lacan, which lays the groundwork for comprehending Althusser's entry into psychoanalysis. Letters to D. was the result of Althusser's fervent reading of Rene Diatkine's paper "Aggressiveness and Fantasies of Aggression," years before Diatkine was his psychoanalyst. Invited by Leon Chertok to participate in the "International Symposium on the Unconscious," at the Tbilisi colloquium, the chapter The Tbilisi Affair presents Althusser's essay "The Discovery of Dr. Freud." The chapter In the Name of the Analysands ... reprints Althusser's "Open Letter to Analysands and Analysts in Solidarity with Jacques Lacan," written the day after the famous meeting on the dissolution of the Ecole Freudienne de Paris. Characterizing Lacan as a "magnificent and pitiful Harlequin," the 'open letter' relates Althusser's untimely outburst at that assembly and the "spectacular and violent intervention he subsequently made in the presence of Lacan." The volume closes with the correspondence between Althusser and Lacan, detailing their first and last meetings with each other and the launching of one of the central alliances of contemporary French thought.

In Potential Images Dario Gamboni explores ambiguity in modern art, considering images that rely to a great degree on a projected or imaginative response from viewers to achieve their effect. Ambiguity became increasingly important in late 19th- and early 20th-century aesthetics, as is evidenced in works by such artists as Redon, Cezanne, Gauguin, Ensor and the Nabis. Similarly, the Cubists subverted traditional representational conventions, requiring their viewers to decipher images to extract their full meanings. The same device was taken up in the various experiments leading to abstraction. For example, it was Kandinsky's intention that his work could be interpreted in both figurative and non-figurative ways, and Duchamp's Readymades suggested the radical conclusion that 'it is the beholder who makes the picture'. These invitations to viewers to participate in the process of artistic communication had social and political implications, as they accorded artist and beholder symmetrical, almost interchangeable, roles.
