La mayoría de los sistemas jurídicos se proyectan sobre la base del principio nominalista que establece la fijeza en el monto de las obligaciones dinerarias; el valor nominal de la prestación permanecerá constante a lo largo de la vida de la obligación. En efecto, ¿qué sentido tendría adoptar la indeterminación en el valor de obligaciones pecuniarias en tiempo de estabilidad monetaria Ciertamente, ninguno. Pero la situación es otra cuando la economía se enfrenta a una escalada en el nivel de precios. Cuando el fenómeno inflacionario llega a interferir en las relaciones jurídicas, es necesario dejar de lado la inmutabilidad de aplicar mecanismos de actualización; cuando la realidad cambia, los mecanismos para enfrentarla deben cambiar también.Así, la importancia del tema de la corrección monetaria es innegable; el dinero es el objeto de la prestación en muchas clases de obligaciones y el medio apto para la satisfacción en otras tantas. Las relaciones jurídicas entre particularidades tiene, así siempre, una referencia mediata o inmediata al dinero. Por ello, cualquier variación en el valor funcional o de cambio del dinero afecta un gran número de relaciones obligacionales. Si bien la inflación es un hecho económico, sus consecuencias jurídicas impiden que los tribunales, el legislador y la doctrina la ignoren.Así, la importancia del tema de la corrección monetaria es innegable; el dinero es el objeto de la prestación en muchas clases de obligaciones y el medio apto para la satisfacción en otras tantas.
