Por qué emigran las personas. Aún habrá gente que se lo pregunte, aquí y allí, dentro y fuera de los espacios migratorios. Sería bueno pensar que la pobreza y la asimetría en el reparto de la riqueza no son las únicas razones para ello, ya sabemos que migraciones ha habido siempre, que son consustanciales a la historia de la humanidad, pero llevamos muchas décadas preguntándonos las causas de las migraciones y en muchos casos parece que únicamente se apunta a la pobreza del Tercer Mundo. Es lógico cuestionarse por estas razones, dada la importancia que tienen para el desarrollo de las sociedades. Pero hoy día también debemos hacernos otras preguntas, y una de las que más me atenazan es poder explicar por qué los migrantes tienen destinos claros, según las etapas históricas, y no deambulan de acá para allá "sin norte", y, sobre todo, qué pasa con estas personas en épocas de crisis severa —crisis económica en origen y destino—. Por qué las migraciones se han convertido, cada vez más, en movimientos transnacionales y los inmigrantes son las hormigas de la globalización. En esta obra se dan respuestas teóricas a muchas de estas cuestiones, en textos de prestigiosos investigadores, como Alejandro Portes, Edgar Morin, Ricardo García Zamora, Miguel Pajares, Àngels Pascual o José Luis Solana, abarcando la situación de países tan dispares como Estados Unidos, México, Argentina o España.

El interés por los temas humanitarios ha crecido considerablemente durante los últimos años. Este interés tiene dos lecturas. Uno positivo, por cuanto es reflejo de la preocupación de numerosos ciudadanos e instituciones por dar respuesta a las múltiples situaciones de crisis que vive nuestro mundo. Otro negativo, porque en ocasiones se ha tratado de un acercamiento muy banal, cuando no oportunista o plagado de otras intenciones, distintas a las humanitarias. Al flujo de refugiados provocado por conflictos o crisis, se une el grave problema del desplazamiento interno y el aumento de otros movimientos migratorios por motivos diversos, principalmente económicos, que hacen de los flujos de población una de las señas de identidad indiscutibles del nuevo siglo. De los muchos enfoques posibles, la Unidad de Estudios Humanitarios se ha centrado en el análisis de las consecuencias humanitarias de los procesos migratorios y en cómo reducir el impacto humano y el sufrimiento que éstos provocan. El primer bloque profundiza en las causas de los movimientos de población aportando numerosos datos cuantitativos y cualitativos de los mismos y ofreciendo un panorama actualizado del problema. El segundo analiza las experiencias de la acción humanitaria con estos colectivos de población desde diversos puntos de vista, entre ellos el jurídico. Las nuevas realidades a las que se enfrentan los migrantes cuando llegan al país de acogida son tratadas desde diversas perspectivas en un tercer bloque y, en último lugar, se incorporan tres artículos que recogen experiencias concretas de trabajo sobre el terreno.

Coming of Age in Madrid is a longitudinal study of twenty-seven Moroccan youth who migrated to Madrid as unaccompanied minors, passed their adolescence in the Spanish child-care system, and embarked on their lives as young adults; interviews were conducted over a period of six years in Spain and Morocco. The stories begin with narrators lives in Morocco, contextualizing their migratory experience, then follows them children traveling alone as they across the Strait of Gibraltar and make their way to Madrid; the study also engages with those who were deported, crossing the Strait once again as they were returned to Morocco. Using qualitative interviews to capture narrators accounts in their own words, this oral history examines their identity trans/formation, integration, and acculturation in Spain. Their individual voices and their collective wisdom contribute to an understanding of their experiences and by extension, that of unaccompanied child migrants everywhere, revealing larger lessons to be learned. Documenting their transition into adulthood, the book poses the crucial question, What becomes of unaccompanied migrant minors when they come of age? Unaccompanied minor migration is on the rise throughout the world, it is the new normal. As Spain and other nations grapple with increasing numbers of unaccompanied children on their borders, the importance of this study has immediate relevance for government policies and migration research. The history of unaccompanied Moroccan minors coming of age in Madrid contributes to the broader geographical discussion by responding to calls for contextualized, micro-scale, local research and the foregrounding and centralizing of the young migrants themselves.
