The stage directions are those of the first edition with some minor rearrangements; but the acts have been divided into scenes, and the spell ing and punctuation modified to conform to modern usage. The contractions deste (de este) etc., have, however, been retained, as the elision would have to be made in pronouncing the lines in which these forms occur, even though both words were printed in full. Las paredes oyen es una expresion procedente de la Francia de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI. Segun cuenta la historia, Catalina de Medicis hizo construir conductos acusticos en las paredes de sus palacios, para oir lo que se hablaba en las otras habitaciones y asi saber si se conspiraba en su contra. Esta pieza homonima cuestiona la mentira patologica y la maledicencia compulsiva del personaje de don Juan, quien para conquistar a Ana pretende injuriarla. Mientras, el virtuoso don Mendo en quien algunos han visto al propio autor, observa despechado los acontecimientos. Don Mendo, dona Ana, Beltran y el Conde aparecen en otras obras de Ruiz de Alarcon como La prueba de las promesas, El examen de maridos, El tejedor de Segovia, Los pechos privilegiados, Ganar amigos y La verdad sospechosa. La comedia tiene un trasfondo astrologico. Los planetas y signos evocados en el texto marcan un entorno mitologico y celestial regido por la Fortuna.
