This textbook originates from a lecture course in laser physics at the Karlsruhe School of Optics and Photonics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). A main goal in the conception of this textbook was to describe the fundamentals of lasers in a uniform and especially lab-oriented notation and formulation as well as many currently well-known laser types, becoming more and more important in the future. It closes a gap between the measureable spectroscopic quantities and the whole theoretical description and modeling. This textbook contains not only the fundamentals and the context of laser physics in a mathematical and methodical approach important for university-level studies. It allows simultaneously, owing to its conception and its modern notation, to directly implement and use the learned matter in the practical lab work. It is presented in a format suitable for everybody who wants not only to understand the fundamentals of lasers but also use modern lasers or even develop and make laser setups. This book tries to limit prerequisite knowledge and fundamental understanding to a minimum and is intended for students in physics, chemistry and mathematics after a bachelor degree, with the intention to create as much joy and interest as seen among the participants of the corresponding lectures. This university textbook describes in its first three chapters the fundamentals of lasers: light-matter interaction, the amplifying laser medium and the laser resonator. In the fourth chapter, pulse generation and related techniques are presented. The fifth chapter gives a closing overview on different laser types gaining importance currently and in the future. It also contains a set of examples on which the theory learned in the first four chapters is applied and extended.

This volume contains lectures and seminars presented at the Nato Advanced Study Institute on "Laser Applications to Chemistry" held at San Miniato (Pisa) Italy, June 27 - July 11, 1982. We would like to give our recognition to all who contributed to the superb scientific quality and to the stimulating atmosphere of this summer school. In particular, we thank all speakers and participants in the discussions. We acknowledge the great efforts of Tito Arecchi as the director of the school, and the assistance of Mrs. Maria Bonaria Petrone and Mrs. Giovanna Ravini in the or ganization of the conference. On behalf of all participants we thank Miss Iva Arecchi for the friendly care she has taken and for her profound guidance through its history and the arts of the Toscana during the excursions. We are in particular indebted to Giacinto Scoles who organ ized this meeting together with Karl L. Kompa. Unfortunately, due to health reasons, Giacinto Scoles had to give up the idea of edit ing the proceedings of this meeting. Naturally, the change in the editorial staff caused a delay in the preparation of this volume. The subject of laser application to chemistry has not been review ed comprehensively in recent years. Many of the lectures andsem inars presented in San Miniato had the character of review arti cles. Therefore we feel that the material contained in this vol ume has not lost any of its actuality.

Since the invention of the laser, the variety of lasers and their uses have grown at a phenomenal rate. Scientists and engineers have at their disposal an enormous array of sophisticated laser equipments with the possibility of carrying out experiments that were inconceivable only a few decades ago. Lasers for Scientists and Engineers is a grand and glorious book that discusses the principles of laser operation and the details of how selected lasers operate. This book is short and easy to read, enabling the reader to thoroughly grasp the subject, with discussions that begin at an elementary level and lead to a complete understanding of lasers. This book is suitable for a one semester college course for upper-level undergraduate or first year graduate level students in physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, and the various fields of engineering. The background needed for this book would be junior level courses in optics and modern physics including elementary quantum mechanics. Request Inspection Copy
