Optical measurement techniques have been stimulated in recent years by the advent of lasers and also by modern electro-optical devices. Despite the considerable research and developments in this field, these techniques are not widely appreciated by engineers, who are often unaware of their versatility. This book provides a single comprehensive source giving the basic science and technology involved in the implementation of these latest methods, for use by industrial and research engineers, in the solution of measurement problems and the design of measurement systems. The book covers the most recent and useful innovations and emphasises applications to practical problems. The emphasis in each chapter has been placed on the transducer aspect, i.e. on the instrumentation necessary to perform specific tasks, so that all the necessary components-basic theory, practical details and devices, application to actual problems· are included, as well as information concerning probable sensitivity, accuracy, etc. Simple explanations of complex physical phenomena have been used instead of rigorous treatments, the latter usually being available from the references associated with each chapter. The increasing concern about CO2 emissions and energy prices has led to new CO2 emission and fuel economy legislation being introduced in world regions served by the automotive industry. In response, automotive manufacturers and Tier-1 suppliers are developing a new generation of internal combustion (IC) engines with ultra-low emissions and high fuel efficiency. To further this development, a better understanding is needed of the combustion and pollutant formation processes in IC engines. Photon correlation is a kind of spectroscopy designed to identify optical frequency shifts and line-broadening effects in the range of many MHz down to a few Hz. The optical intensity is measured in terms of single photon detection events which result in current pulses at the output of photomulti plier tubes. This signal is processed in real time in a special-purpose paral lel processor known as a correlator. The resulting photon correlation func tion, a function in the time domain, contains the desired spectral informa tion, which may be extracted by a suitable algorithm. Due to the non-intrusive nature and the sound theoretical basis of photon correlation, the phenomena under study are not disturbed, and the parameters in question can be precisely evaluated. For these reasons photon correlation has become a valuable and in many instances indispensable technique in two distinct fields. One of these is velocimetry in fluid flow. This includes hydro- and aerodynamic processes in liquids, gases, or flames where the velo city field may be stationary, time periodic, or turbulent, and may range from micrometers per second for motion inside biological cells to one kilometer per second for supersonic flow. The other major field is stochastic particle propagation due to Brownian motion.

This Lecture Series covers the recent advances of planar optical measurement techniques with respect to their applicability to gas turbine component tests. During the last years much progress has been achieved in various known techniques, and new methods have been developed from which a significant increase of the experimental output of propulsion tests and therefore remarkable cost reduction can be expected. To bring this status into the knowledge of the propulsion specialists is the aim of this lecture series. Its theme is focused on laser measurement methods for the analysis of the internal flow and reaction processes in propulsion engines. It will address techniques for the measurement of flow velocity, flow density, pressure, temperature and species concentration. Only those methods are introduced which are far enough developed to be applicable to the rough test conditions of propulsion experiments. The course will inform the audience about the fundamentals of the advanced measurement techniques, as well as demonstrate their use in the context of practical applications. The material in this publication was collected from the research centers of the different NATO nations.
