This comprehensive volume surveys the general aspects of atomic cluster science and outlines some of its important new challenges. It begins by detailing the recent advances in the understanding of structure and the essential properties of selected atomic cluster systems, fullerenes and confined atoms. Recent advances in the field of photo processes involving atomic clusters and fullerenes are discussed, and an entire chapter is devoted to the problem of fission dynamics of atomic clusters, presenting parallels with similar processes in nuclear physics. The book goes on to describe the problems of electron-cluster collisions with special emphasis on polarization and collective excitation effects. The important area of the behavior of atomic clusters in laser fields is considered; the ionization, collective dynamics of electrons in the system in the presence of the laser field, and the laser induced dynamics of molecules and clusters are thoroughly described. Finally, a broad spectrum of problems in the area of ionic collisions with fullerenes and metal clusters is covered — from both experimental and theoretical points of view — and the results of the most recent measurements are reported. The concluding chapter takes a careful look at the interaction of an atomic cluster with a surface. The problems of cluster deposition and formation at a surface as well as collision processes involving clusters deposited at a surface are considered through a number of illustrative examples./a

Polarization Bremsstrahlung written by Andrey V. Korol and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-05 with Science categories.
This book introduces and reviews both theory and applications of polarizational bremsstrahlung, i.e. the electromagnetic radiation emitted during collisions of charged particles with structured, thus polarizable targets, such as atoms, molecules and clusters. The subject, following the first experimental evidence a few decades ago, has gained importance through a number of modern applications. Thus, the study of several radiative mechanisms is expected to lead to the design of novel light sources, operating in various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Conversely, the analysis of the spectral and angular distribution of the photon emission constitutes a new tool for extracting information on the interaction of the colliding particles, and on their internal structure and dynamical properties. Last but not least, accurate quantitative descriptions of the photon emission processes determine the radiative energy losses of particles in various media, thereby providing essential information required for e.g. plasma diagnostics as well as astrophysical and medical applications (such as radiation therapy). This book primarily addresses graduate students and researchers with a background in atomic, molecular, optical or plasma physics, but will also be of benefit to anyone wishing to enter the field.

Ladies and gentlemen, dear colleagues, welcome to Kemer to the NATO Advanced Study Institute Structure and Dynamics of Elementary Matter. We have chosen Kemer as the place of our NASI because it is located in a be- tiful and hospitable surrounding. This part of the Mediterranean at the Turkish Riviera is a historic region where many cultures meet (e.g., the Oriental and the Greek and Roman European cultures) and where you ?nd numerous places which played a role in ancient science and in early Christianity. Moreover, with the hotel Ceylan Inter-Continental we have found a most excellent me- ing place, directly located at the beach, equipped with wonderful swimming pools and restaurants – an absolutely ?rst-class location. Our NASIwill deal withthemost recent developmentsin high-energyheavy ionphysicsandinthesearchforsuperheavynuclei–tworatherdistinctareasof research. Indeed, we want to bring two very active communities of nuclear and high-energy physics into close contact. The meeting is both a school and has also the character of a conference: A school because there are many advanced students, many of which are themselves already top researchers and who are contributing with their own research in seminars and posters. It is also a c- ference because new results in the exciting and wonderful ?elds of low- and high-energy heavy ion physics will be presented. We are mainly focussing on the topics of superheavy elements and of hot and dense nuclear matter.

'I read The Planetary Atom with great interest. Of course, we are all aware of the major contributions made by legendary researchers such as Ernest Rutherford, who first set up the model known as 'the planetary atom'. But I knew nothing of the much more discrete figure of George Adolphus Schott. I was impressed, on reading this book, to discover the significance and conceptual depth of his work.'Claude Cohen-TannoudjiNobel Laureate in PhysicsCollège de France, Paris 'Although Science is not fiction, the lives and works of scientists provide real substance for a novel like The Planetary Atom, which tells a story of general public interest.'Jean-Marie LehnNobel Laureate in ChemistryUniversité Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg Foreword by Roald Hoffmann, Nobel Laureate in ChemistryThis largely imaginary biography recreates the life and times of George Adolphus Schott, a contemporary of Rutherford and Bohr, who criticized the Planetary Atom which was proposed to account for celebrated observations by Rutherford. Schott proved the Planetary Atom to be incompatible with fundamental properties of physics. Unfortunately, his work was cast aside because of Bohr's success in accounting for the structure of the atom. Later, it was found that Schott had, in fact, predicted important effects. Nonetheless, his contribution was forgotten and his discovery of Synchrotron Radiation was attributed to another. In The Planetary Atom, Schott's interactions with eminent scientists of the time are reconstructed. The novel rehabilitates an unjustly forgotten British researcher and restores him to his rightful place as one of the great scientists of his time.Related Link(s)

Atomic and molecular collision physics has undergone extraordinary transformations in last few decades which is driven by a convergence of breakthroughs in the sophisticated instruments, theoretical advancements, and computational capabilities. Rapid advancement and availability of a number of sophisticated tools, such as, accelerators, ion sources, lasers, synchrotrons, free electron lasers etc, have led this remarkable transformation. On the other hand, there has been a phenomenal growth in the theoretical front which has not only complemented the experimental data, but also have predicted new mechanisms guiding the experimentalists to venture into the new and challenging experiments. This comprehensive collection of articles aims to capture the essence of these exciting developments, offering a comprehensive overview of the latest insights into the field. The articles are prepared such that the newcomers in the field will get a glimpse in the field while presenting state-of-the-art reviews for the scientists working in the field. The thirty authors from different countries, who have prepared the thirteen articles, are experts in their respective fields of research. The articles deal with relatively new discoveries in atomic and molecular physics as well as the latest development in the field. The experimental techniques and the related scientific achievements using different electron spectrometers, EUV/VUV spectrometers, high-resolution momentum imaging and COLTRIMS have been dealt in details. The post-collision interaction in ion-atom collisions, the atomic and molecular ICD, spatial coherence in molecular double slit scattering, electron capture and Shannon entropy, collisions involving atomic and molecular dimers, ultrafast processes in clusters and fullerene (C60), and processes like ionization and electron emission are delved in various chapters. It also explores the theoretical modeling for the structure and collisions involving water molecule and water-clusters [(H2O)n], important for radio-biological applications. In addition, theoretical techniques, such as, the CDW-EIS, CTMC, TDDFT and TDLDA, eikonal impulse approximation, perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster theory are introduced in different chapters. A few dynamical scenarios using fast and ultrafast laser pulses are explored, theoretically, starting from femtosecond to the attosecond domain. Bridging the gap between the spectroscopy and collisional aspects is one unique feature of this book. A suitable balance between theory-based (seven chapters) and experiment-based (six chapters) articles is important characteristics of this volume. Each chapter, surveys not only the current state of knowledge but also indicating the pathways forward and indicating the practical applications of atomic collisions in diverse scientific disciplines, such as, science of plasmas, astrochemistry, astrophysics, radiobiology, radiation damage, laser and accelerator technology etc. It is expected that the volume serves as a valuable resource for researchers, students, and enthusiasts alike, pushing the boundaries of our understanding of atomic physics and its applications.
