Excerpt from Latin Pronunciation Enough has been said to prove how empty are the claims of those who maintain that they have recovered, in all its particulars, the exact pronunciation of the ancient Romans. Excerpt from Latin Pronunciation and the Latin Alphabet Within the last twenty or thirty years great progress has been made in the dominion of language as well as in all the departments of the arts and sciences. Before this time, the classical languages were a separate branch of study and of learned investigation, but by the efforts of Prof. F. Bopp and his school, they are now acknowledged to be members of one large family, the organic forms of which mutually supply and explain each other. Most idioms of Italy, even, are shown to be members of one common stock, by the important labors of Aufrecht, Kirchhoff, Mommsen, and other learned men, and the Latin itself, far from being any longer regarded as a mere mongrel composition of Greek and barbarian elements, is now universally admitted, by the learned, to be of the same independent growth among the other Italic dialects, as the Hebrew among the Semitic. Highly important results, moreover, have been attained by the critical examination of Latin texts made by Ritschl, Lachmann, Fleckeisen, and others, while floods of light have been shed on the whole history of the development of the Latin language, by the investigations of Diez, Fuchs, and other philologists, who, starting with the Latin in the latest stages of its existence, have traced from it the beginnings of the modern Romance tongues. Excerpt from The Three Pronunciations of Latin For more than a score of years, my time has been spent in the class-room in the Department of Latin. Thousands of young men, within the period named, have received their training, to some extent, at least, at my hands. Many of these, in their labors as teachers, have under their care the ancient languages. Inquiries as to methods of teaching and pronunciation have become so frequent as to call for the publication of an article which might be sent to those interested, and a correspondence be thus avoided, which might otherwise prove burdensome. This state of facts will, in large part, explain the origin and elementary character of this discussion. It is natural, too, that persons engaged in teaching, adopting to some extent the modes of former instructors, should wish to know somewhat more fully the reasons which influenced those instructors in the course they were pleased to pursue. The first edition of The Three Pronunciations of Latin has been exhausted for some months past. The present enlarged edition has been brought out to a very considerable extent, from the influence of teachers and scholars in various parts of our country, whose letters on the subject manifest deep interest in the pronunciation of the Latin tongue. The hope is indulged, therefore, that the work in the form now offered, may not only tend to answer inquiries alluded to above, but also that it may not be unacceptable to teachers in general, who are engaged in giving instructions in this department of study. Excerpt from Latin Pronunciation: A Short Exposition of the Roman Method This short manual is primarily intended for those who, being interested in the study of Latin, have accepted the Roman method of pronunciation upon the authority of the Grammars, but have either not been able to command the time to make themselves familiar with the arguments upon which this system is based, or have been repelled by the technicalities employed in treating the question from the standpoint of the specialist. It is believed that the following pages will be found to give in simple form the main facts bearing upon this interesting question; and that nothing has been introduced that is either unnecessary or obscure. For those who may wish to pursue their investigations farther after mastering these facts, a bibliography of the subject is given at the end. Excerpt from A Few Remarks on the Pronunciation of Latin I have a sufficient knowledge of the ordinary Scotch method and care for no contradiction however fiat. If in Edinburgh or elsewhere any pursue a superfine system, acceptable alike to gods and men, to Spaniard, Italian and ancient Roman, that is not Scotch, but some ideal which common mortals would fain attain to, but cannot. Excerpt from Roman Orthoepy: A Plea for the Restoration of the True System of Latin Pronunciation The author of this little Manual was, from 1838 to 1850, professor of the Latin language and litera ture in Madison University. During the latter part of that period, ° he became dissatisfied with the English mode of pronouncing Latin, and convinced that a change, at least so far as to substitute the German for the English vowel sounds, would be, intrinsically, a great improvement. But the fancied inconveniences of a change - inconveniences which experience has taught him were greatly exagger ated - together with a strong repugnance to the notoriety of singularity, presented obstacles which his conviction of its inherent advantages was then unable to surmount.
