Latin Via Ovid written by Norma Goldman and has been published by Wayne State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1982 with Education categories.

Using an introduction to mythology by the master storyteller Ovid himself, the authors have prepared a unique teaching tool designed to achieve proficiency at Latin in one year at the college level, two years at the high school or intermediate level. The volume provides students with imaginative, connected reading, beginning with introductory prose versions of Ovid's simple myth tales and progressing to the rich poetry of Ovidian Latin (with appropriate teaching aids) within forty lessons. The grammatical approach is traditional, but the central emphasis is on reading. In each chapter the reading appears first, followed by the vocabulary, the grammar, exercises, and etymology relating to the vocabulary. The exercises begin with a group of questions in Latin (based on the reading), to be answered in Latin. Each tale is preceded by a brief discussion in English of the story and its mythological significance. The myths retold by Ovid and the attractive format are conceived to impel the student into acquiring the skill to read the author in the original language. This extract from Ovid's 'Theban History' recounts the confrontation of Pentheus, king of Thebes, with his divine cousin, Bacchus, the god of wine. Notwithstanding the warnings of the seer Tiresias and the cautionary tale of a character Acoetes (perhaps Bacchus in disguise), who tells of how the god once transformed a group of blasphemous sailors into dolphins, Pentheus refuses to acknowledge the divinity of Bacchus or allow his worship at Thebes. Enraged, yet curious to witness the orgiastic rites of the nascent cult, Pentheus conceals himself in a grove on Mt. Cithaeron near the locus of the ceremonies. But in the course of the rites he is spotted by the female participants who rush upon him in a delusional frenzy, his mother and sisters in the vanguard, and tear him limb from limb. The episode abounds in themes of abiding interest, not least the clash between the authoritarian personality of Pentheus, who embodies 'law and order', masculine prowess, and the martial ethos of his city, and Bacchus, a somewhat effeminate god of orgiastic excess, who revels in the delusional and the deceptive, the transgression of boundaries, and the blurring of gender distinctions. This course book offers a wide-ranging introduction, the original Latin text, study aids with vocabulary, and an extensive commentary. Designed to stretch and stimulate readers, Gildenhard and Zissos's incisive commentary will be of particular interest to students of Latin at AS and undergraduate level. It extends beyond detailed linguistic analysis to encourage critical engagement with Ovid's poetry and discussion of the most recent scholarly thought. Telling Tales In Latin written by Lorna Robinson and has been published by Souvenir Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-01 with Juvenile Nonfiction categories.

Telling Tales in Latin teaches Latin through the magic of storytelling. Narrated by the chatty and imaginative Roman poet Ovid (who lived in the Rome of the first century B.C), this new course takes young learners on a journey through some of the tales from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Along the way, they pick up Latin words and grammar, explore the connections between Latin and English and discover how Ovid's stories still speak to us today. Each chapter introduces one of Ovid's much-loved stories, encouraging children to begin reading Latin immediately while exploring the literary and mythic context of the stories. At the end of each chapter there are suggested activities to help learners to think about what they have just read, and to understand how the stories connect to ideas and issues that are still relevant today, from relationships with others and philosophy, to science and caring for the planet. Soham De's illustrations bring Ovid's stories alive for a wide range of learners and make learning Latin a colourful journey of discovery. Telling Tales in Latin outlines how Latin is the basis for English grammar, unlocking the complexities of learning English (and other languages) along the way. It also contains the vocabulary and grammar needed for the OCR Entry Level Latin qualification, making this book the ideal first introduction to Latin.
