Latinx students are becoming the majority population in K-12 public schools in the United States. Despite higher education institutions, K-12 schools, and non-profit organizations working to increase Latinx college admission rates, these students continue to be underrepresented in four-year colleges/universities. Latinx students who successfully overcome the multiple barriers to become eligible, apply, and admitted into a university may find their post-secondary plans disintegrate during the summer months between high school graduation and college matriculation (Rall, 2016; Tichavakunda & Galan, 2020). This is a time period where traditionally neither the high school nor the intended college take responsibility for these students or support their transition, resulting in the failure of some students to matriculate at their intended post-secondary institution. Summer melt is a term applied to students that apply to college, are accepted to college, but melt away from the enrollment cycle in the summer months prior to the fall term for various reasons (Castleman & Page, 2014). This phenomenological study collected data from semi-structured interviews with California Latinx students who planned to attend university immediately after high school graduation in 2020 but did not actually matriculate at a four-year institution. The goal was to better understand the lived experiences of Latinx summer melt students as well as explore factors that influenced their final college decision during the COVID-19 pandemic. Study participants discussed the challenges they encountered during their college application and enrollment process and how they navigated these obstacles utilizing different supports and forms of community cultural wealth. The challenges students faced during their journey to college were COVID-19 pandemic, college cost and family finances, difficulty completing college enrollment tasks, and personal challenges. Students received support during their college transition process from family, near-age peers, high school staff, college access program staff, and community college staff. The major forms of CCW students utilized in the pursuit of their college goals were aspirational, familial, social and navigational while the least forms of capital used were resistant and linguistic.

'Pandemic and Narration: Covid-19 Narratives in Latin America' sheds light on how, as Covid-19 spread, infecting and killing millions across the world, life not only continued to be experienced but also continued to be narrated. By putting together this volume, we help understand what happened in the region from a perspective in which, unlike most of what we saw during the health emergency, numbers, statistics and percentages are not at the centre of the analysis. The essays gathered here foreground something else: the manifold ways Covid-19 was subjectively and collectively narrated in the news, government reports, political speeches, NGO communications, social media, literature, songs and many other media. From a wide range of disciplinary approaches, the contributors to this edition pay attention to how fictional and non-fictional stories, official discourses, as well as personal and political accounts, documented, represented and shaped the health crisis, laying bare how —in Latin American countries— the spread of the virus intersected with corruption, gender-based violence, inequality and exclusion, as with community, solidarity and hope. Readers will find that the focus on narrative provides an alternative source of knowledge on Latin America’s Covid-19 experience. Our perspective contrasts with the usual emphasis on death tolls, infection rates, weekly cases, vaccination counts, and the plethora of statistics that illustrated the gravity of the situation in the build-up to, during, and after the peak of the crisis. While extremely important to understand the situation, numbers do not tell the whole story. A comprehensive picture of the pandemic can only be achieved when the stories of the virus are accounted for. Health, after all, is no stranger to narrative. And neither is Latin America.

The study aims to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted Latino’s access to mental health services. The qualitative exploratory study outreach was completed among social media platforms, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions across eastern, central, and western Washington areas. A total of 8 Latino identifying adults that were in the process of receiving mental health services, or, currently utilizing mental health services during COVID-19 were interviewed. The interviewees acknowledged their understanding of the mental health system. To acknowledge their understanding semi-structured interviews were conducted. These involved the use of visual images and questions around what may exist at individual and institutional levels while navigating mental health services. Participants were able to supply recommendations on how they would like to see the mental health system improved. Major findings suggested that barriers are elevated when accessing services on a multitude of levels: macro, mezzo, and micro. Findings confirmed that telehealth mental services in the United States are not readily accessible for the Latino community. Participants recommended institutional, community, and accessibility changes.

The pandemic caused by COVID-19 has brought us a serious global economic, health and social crisis. In this context, there has been an increase in the inequality between men and women around the world. In this situation of home confinement, uncertainty, stress and fear, women have been the most affected, regardless of their level of education. In the case of women academics, they have experienced an overload of remote work, but also an increase in the household chores and other activities such as the care of older adults and school teaching of their minor children. The greatest impacts on the perception were the lack of gender equity (SDG 5) and, therefore, the increase of the gender inequality gap (SDG 10) during the pandemic in Latin America (LA).

This anthropological study explores the beliefs and practices that emerged around masking in the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic. Americans responded to this illness as unique subjects navigating the flux of social and corporeal boundaries, supporting certain beliefs and acting to shape them as compelling realities. Debates over health and safety mandates indicated that responses were fractured with varied subjectivities in play—people lived in different worlds and bodies were central in conflicts over breathing, masking and social distancing. Contrasting approaches to practices marked the limits and possibilities of imaginaries, signaling differences and similarities between groups, and how actions could be passageways between people and possibilities. During a time of uncertainty and loss, the "efficacious intimacy" of bodies and materials embedded beliefs, values, and emotions of care in mask sewing and usage. By exploring these practices, the author reflects on how American subjects became relational selves and sustained response-able communities, helping people protect each other from mutating viruses as well as moving forward in a shifting terrain of intimacy and distance, connection, and containment.

Frustrated with the flood of news articles and opinion pieces that were skeptical of minority students' "imagined" campus microaggressions, Micere Keels, a professor of comparative human development, set out to provide a detailed account of how racial-ethnic identity structures Black and Latinx students' college transition experiences. Tracking a cohort of more than five hundred Black and Latinx students since they enrolled at five historically white colleges and universities in the fall of 2013 Campus Counterspaces finds that these students were not asking to be protected from new ideas. Instead, they relished exposure to new ideas, wanted to be intellectually challenged, and wanted to grow. However, Keels argues, they were asking for access to counterspaces—safe spaces that enable radical growth. They wanted counterspaces where they could go beyond basic conversations about whether racism and discrimination still exist. They wanted time in counterspaces with likeminded others where they could simultaneously validate and challenge stereotypical representations of their marginalized identities and develop new counter narratives of those identities. In this critique of how universities have responded to the challenges these students face, Keels offers a way forward that goes beyond making diversity statements to taking diversity actions.
